About the Temple
Lingyen Mountain Temple (Canada) is a Mahayana Buddhist monastery dedicated to the promotion of Buddhist teachings, Dharma education, spiritual cultivation, cultural preservation, and community service. The Temple provides religious services, Dharma classes, youth education programs, cultural activities, and community outreach initiatives for Buddhist practitioners and the broader community.
Position Summary
The Director of Buddhist Education is responsible for providing leadership, direction, and oversight of the Temple's educational programs, including Dharma classes, youth development initiatives, and cultural education activities. The successful candidate will lead the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of Buddhist educational programs while ensuring that all activities are conducted in accordance with Buddhist teachings, monastic traditions, and the Temple's religious mission.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Direct and oversee the operations of the Temple's Education Department;
- Develop, implement, and evaluate Dharma education programs for practitioners, youth, and members of the community;
- Plan, organize, and conduct Dharma classes, lectures, workshops, retreats, and educational seminars;
- Develop curriculum, instructional materials, and educational resources relating to Buddhist teachings, ethics, meditation, Buddhist philosophy, and monastic practices;
- Provide religious instruction, spiritual guidance, and mentorship to practitioners, students, volunteers, and community members;
- Lead and supervise Buddhist youth programs, leadership development initiatives, educational camps, and volunteer activities;
- Plan and coordinate Buddhist cultural education programs, festivals, ceremonies, and community outreach activities;
- Train, supervise, and support Dharma instructors, volunteers, and educational program coordinators;
- Participate in the planning and administration of religious services, ceremonies, retreats, and Temple educational events;
- Promote Buddhist teachings through public education, community engagement, and educational outreach initiatives;
- Develop annual departmental plans, budgets, reports, and program evaluations;
- Establish and maintain relationships with Buddhist organizations, educational institutions, and community groups;
- Ensure all educational activities are conducted in accordance with Buddhist doctrine, monastic discipline, and Temple policies;
- Assist senior Temple leadership in advancing the Temple's religious, educational, and charitable objectives;
- Perform other related duties as assigned by Temple leadership.
Employment Requirements
- Must be an ordained Buddhist monk or nun in good standing within a recognized Buddhist monastic order;
- Minimum 10 years of experience serving in a Buddhist monastery, temple, or religious institution;
- Minimum 10 years of experience teaching Buddhist doctrine, Dharma education, spiritual development, or religious studies programs;
- Extensive knowledge of Mahayana Buddhist teachings, Buddhist scriptures, monastic discipline, Buddhist philosophy, and religious education;
- Demonstrated experience developing and administering Dharma classes, youth programs, religious retreats, and cultural education programs;
- Experience providing spiritual guidance, religious instruction, and mentorship to practitioners and community members;
- Experience supervising volunteers, instructors, monastic personnel, and educational program participants;
- Excellent leadership, organizational, communication, and public speaking skills;
Language Requirements
- English proficiency required.
- Mandarin Chinese proficiency is an asset.
