We're seeking a compassionate and experienced caregiver to support an 83-year-old woman living independently in her Scarborough apartment. She's recently returned home from the hospital and is managing multiple health conditions including stage 4 breast cancer, lung cancer, and bone cancer. She requires supplemental oxygen and benefits greatly from companionship and engagement.
About the Client: She's a bubbly, happy-go-lucky person who loves to talk and socialize. While she currently receives government-funded PSW visits (morning, lunch, and evening), these visits are brief and task-focused. She's doing much better since returning home and is even attempting light cleaning herself, but she experiences loneliness, especially on weekends when family visits are less frequent. Clear English communication is essential.
Responsibilities: Monitor and record oxygen levels regularly throughout each visit. Verify medication has been taken as prescribed and provide reminders if needed. Assist with mobility support and transfers as she uses mobility aids. Provide light tidying and household organization to maintain a comfortable living space. Prepare simple meals or assist with meal preparation. Most importantly, provide meaningful companionship through conversation, activities like puzzles or coloring, and gentle physical activity such as walking in the apartment hallway or sitting outside in the building's lobby. You may need to learn how to switch her oxygen from the main unit to a portable tank for outdoor activities—family will provide training.
What We're Looking For: Experience working with medically complex clients, particularly those with cancer and oxygen therapy. Ability to provide both practical support and genuine emotional engagement. Someone patient, calm, and reliable who brings positive energy and takes initiative. Strong communication skills and comfort keeping family updated on the client's wellbeing. Respect for her independence while ensuring safety. Experience with memory prompts and gentle redirection is valuable as there have been some cognitive changes. A valid driver's license is helpful for occasional outings, though public transportation or rideshare services can be used.
Schedule: Two visits per week—Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, with each visit lasting 2 hours. Preferred timing is a 2 hour slot between 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM The family values consistency and hopes to build a long-term relationship with the right caregiver. Schedule adjustments may occasionally be needed with advance notice if family members are visiting.
This is an opportunity to make a real difference in someone's life by providing not just care, but genuine connection and companionship during a challenging time.
