Reporting to the Manager, Campus Operations, the Overnight Cleaning Supervisor oversees custodial operations during nighttime hours to ensure classrooms, studios, fabrication spaces, galleries, labs, washrooms, and public areas are cleaned, sanitized, and reset for the next day’s activities.
The Supervisor leads a team of overnight custodial staff, coordinates work assignments, conducts quality inspections, and ensures adherence to health, safety, and sustainability standards. Working independently with limited on‑site management, the Supervisor makes routine operational decisions and responds to after‑hours issues to maintain safe, efficient, and consistent overnight operations. The role also serves as the primary point of contact for overnight operational concerns.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Core Responsibilities

Provide leadership to overnight cleaning staff and coordinate workflow.

Conduct routine and periodic quality inspections.

Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.

Support and promote sustainable and green‑cleaning practices.
Nightly Cleaning & Facility Preparation
-
Oversee cleaning in specialized art and design spaces including studios, workshops, spray booths, darkrooms, digital labs, galleries, and high‑traffic areas.
- Ensure safe and proper cleaning of creative materials (paint, plaster dust, clay, ink, adhesives, wood shavings).
- Reset classrooms, studios, and shared workspaces for next‑day academic use.
- Oversee waste removal, recycling, and hazardous‑material segregation following institutional guidelines.
- Ensure washrooms, corridors, stairwells, elevators, and common areas are cleaned, sanitized, and fully stocked.
Staff Supervision & Training

Lead, support, and monitor the performance of overnight cleaners.

Train staff on cleaning standards, equipment use, chemical handling, and safety procedures.

Monitor attendance and document performance issues, escalating when required.

Conduct shift briefings and communicate nightly priorities.
Quality Assurance & Facility Inspections

Conduct nightly inspections of classrooms, studios, workshops, galleries, washrooms, offices, and high‑traffic spaces.
- Identify cleanliness issues, hazards, and deficiencies, ensuring prompt corrective action through the institutional work‑order system.
- Maintain standards related to sustainability, including use of green‑cleaning products and waste‑diversion practices.
Health, Safety & Regulatory Compliance

Ensure compliance with OHSA, WHMIS, and institutional health and safety requirements.
- Maintain safe handling and storage of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
- Report hazards, equipment failures, incidents, and near‑misses through designated reporting processes.
- Promote safe working practices during low‑occupancy overnight operations.
Inventory, Supplies & Equipment Management

Monitor nightly use of cleaning supplies, consumables, and PPE.
- Report supply shortages and assist with requisition planning.
- Ensure equipment (auto‑scrubbers, vacuums, HEPA units, floor machines) is cleaned, maintained, and secured after use.
- Communicate equipment concerns or supply needs to daytime management.
Communication & Reporting

Serve as the primary operational contact during overnight hours, including responding to custodial related emergencies.

Complete nightly logs, incident reports, inspection summaries, and shift‑handover notes for daytime management.

Competent use and knowledge of CMMS, (Computerized Maintenance Manager System) and/or work-order ticketing systems to document all tasks, issues, related to campus custodial support and follow up.

Maintain clear communication with daytime supervisors to ensure operational continuity.
Qualifications:
-
Secondary school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education an asset.

One (1) year of related custodial or facilities experience; experience in art, fabrication, or lab environments is an asset.

Valid Ontario G‑Class (G or G2) driver’s license and a clean, current driver’s abstract.

Valid Emergency First Aid and Adult CPR certification.

Two (2) years of custodial or facilities cleaning experience in institutional, industrial, or commercial settings.

Strong understanding of cleaning procedures for creative materials (ink, plaster, sawdust, clay, adhesives, solvents).

Two (2) years of supervisory experience, preferably during nighttime or low‑supervision shifts.

Strong knowledge of cleaning practices, equipment, chemicals, green-cleaning standards, OHSA, WHMIS, and safe chemical handling.
Mode of Work: On Campus
Compensation: $33.03 per hour, plus 4% vacation pay and 7% in lieu of benefits;
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, for a total of 35 hours per week, 10 PM - 6 AM. This is a temporary contract with an expected duration of 1 year.
