Position Overview
Reporting to the Accounting Supervisor, the Senior Accountant will primarily be responsible for ensuring the integrity of accounting information by recording, verifying, and reconciling transactions, and resolving discrepancies. This role will prepare financial results reports for the management team, ensure corporate compliance with federal and provincial regulatory requirements, aid in the auditing function, support budgeting and forecasting and act as a guide to other accountants and support staff. The Senior Accountant will ensure the organization utilizes ethical accounting practices and standards across the retail fuel and convenience business operated by North Sun Energy – a limited partnership between North Atlantic and Petro-Canada.
Duties and Responsabilities:
- Support the preparation and review of monthly/quarterly financial statements, operating results, gross margin, and cash flow analysis
- Assist and review the accuracy of financial reporting, journal entries, and reconciliations completed by staff
- Support the annual external audit process by coordinating with third-party auditors and ensuring timely resolution of audit requests and completion of deliverables
- Support month-end and year-end close, including preparation of working papers and documentation
- Support the development and execution of budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning processes
- Contribute to ERP, systems, and process improvement initiatives
- Monitor and assess accounting and administrative internal controls, ethical standards, legislation, policies, and procedures to ensure corporate compliance within the organization
- Review payment batches and ensure compliance with internal controls
- Contribute to process improvements and efficiency initiatives
- Other duties as required
Qualifications:
- Degree or an advanced degree in business administration, management, finance, accounting, or a related field
- Professional accounting designation required; however, consideration will be given to candidates with an equivalent combination of relevant education and progressive accounting experience
- At least five years of accounting experience including preparation of financial reports, preparation of working papers and general ledger experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of accepted accounting rules, practices, tax laws, and reporting requirements
- Advanced proficiency with accounting software and spreadsheet programs and applications
- Excellent organizational and prioritization skills with a strong attention to detail
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, confidence and ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization and with external clients
