Position Overview
Little Bear Early Learning Centre is seeking a compassionate and experienced Educational Assistant to provide one-on-one support to a preschool-aged child. The successful applicant will work closely with educators, families, and support professionals to promote the child’s development, participation, communication, emotional regulation, and safety.
Little Bear is a Métis-led early learning centre that values inclusion, cultural safety, land-based learning, and respectful relationships with children and families. Applicants must have an ECE certification or Educational Assistant diploma and at least two years of experience working with children.
Qualifications
- A minimum of two years of experience working with children is required
- Early Childhood Education certification or an Educational Assistant diploma is strongly preferred
- Experience supporting children with disabilities, developmental delays, behavioural needs, communication differences, or diverse learning needs
- Experience working in a preschool, daycare, school, or inclusive childcare environment
- Understanding of child development, trauma-informed care, and positive behaviour-support strategies
- Knowledge of Métis and Indigenous cultures, histories, perspectives, and ways of knowing is considered a strong asset
- Experience working with Métis, First Nations, Inuit, or other Indigenous children, families, or communities is an asset
- Willingness to participate in cultural learning, land-based programming, and professional development
- Current First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain it
- A satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide consistent one-on-one support to a preschool-aged child throughout the day
- Support the child’s individual goals and strategies as outlined in support plans
- Work alongside Early Childhood Educators to adapt activities and learning experiences to meet the child’s needs
- Encourage independence while providing appropriate supervision, guidance, and hands-on assistance
- Use respectful, strengths-based, and developmentally appropriate approaches
- Help prevent and respond to challenging behaviours using calm, proactive, and trauma-informed strategies
- Support the child during indoor and outdoor play, meals, rest periods, toileting, transitions, community walks, and land-based activities
- Observe and document the child’s progress, behaviour, participation, and areas requiring additional support
- Communicate relevant observations and concerns to the supervising educator and leadership team
- Collaborate with families, educators, therapists, consultants, and other professionals when appropriate
- Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries at all times
- Participate in classroom cleaning, activity preparation, and general program responsibilities
- Promote cultural safety, inclusion, belonging, and respect for all children and families
