About the Role
We are seeking a Managing Director, Marketing, PR & Communications to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight across our external-facing engagement departments. This senior leadership role directs three interconnected volunteer teams:
- Marketing & Digital Media Team
- Public Relations & Communications Team
You will be responsible for guiding these teams, aligning departmental objectives with organizational priorities, and ensuring EHS communicates effectively, ethically, and consistently across all channels. This role also acts as the primary liaison between the Marketing/PR functions and the Board of Directors.
This is an excellent opportunity for leaders who are either transitioning from full time executive roles to fractional, advisory or portfolio work who want to make a direct impact on animal welfare, community engagement, and organizational growth in the non-profit sector.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Planning
- Lead the development of marketing, and communications strategies aligned with EHS’s mission and Board priorities.
- Set departmental goals and KPIs to increase brand awareness, donor engagement, and community reach.
- Oversee long-term planning and implementation for campaigns, donor programs, events, and digital initiatives.
Team Management & Volunteer Leadership
- Provide leadership, coaching, mentorship, and support to three volunteer teams: Marketing, and PR/Communications.
- Hold regular team meetings and one-on-one check-ins, ensuring clarity of expectations, accountability, and positive team morale.
- Support volunteer recruitment, onboarding, training, and role clarity for all team members.
- Foster cross-team collaboration and a culture of open communication, creativity, and continuous improvement.
Marketing & Digital Engagement
- Oversee content strategies on EHS website, social media, newsletters, and digital campaigns.
- Ensure consistent branding, messaging, and storytelling across platforms.
- Guide digital strategy for increased visibility, engagement, and online donations.
Public Relations & Communications
- Oversee the development of press releases, media engagement strategies, and organizational communications.
- Support the organization’s spokesperson for external communications where appropriate.
- Guide crisis communication, reputation management, and sensitive public messaging.
Board & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Serve as the primary link between Marketing/PR teams and the EHS Board of Directors.
- Collaborate with other Managing Directors and functional teams (Dog, Cat, Office, etc.) to ensure alignment and consistent communication.
- Prepare regular updates, reports, and recommendations for Board meetings.
Budgeting & Resource Management
- Manage budgets for marketing, and communications activities responsibly.
- Ensure cost-effective approaches and maximize impact with available resources.
Qualifications
- 5–8+ years of experience in marketing, communications, or public relations (nonprofit or agency experience is an asset).
- Strong leadership experience, ideally managing teams or cross-functional groups.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic plans and department-level initiatives.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; skilled storyteller and brand advocate.
- Understanding of digital marketing, analytics, SEO/SEM, and content strategy.
- Experience with donor engagement, campaigns, or sponsorship outreach.
- Strong organizational, prioritization, and project management abilities.
- Experience mentoring and supporting volunteers is an asset.
- Genuine passion for animal welfare and community-driven work.
