Position Overview
The Fabrication Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of our manufacturing facility in Kingston, Ontario, ensuring that production targets, quality standards, and safety regulations are met. This role bridges the gap between upper management and shop floor operations. You will directly lead, mentor, and coordinate a skilled local team of welders, machinists, and fabricators to deliver projects safely, on time, and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Daily Shop Operations: Direct and schedule all daily shop floor activities to maximize production efficiency and meet deadlines.
- Team Leadership: Supervise, mentor, and evaluate a team of welders, machinists, and fabricators, fostering a productive work environment.
- Safety & Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to company safety policies and provincial occupational health and safety regulations (OHSA).
- Quality Assurance: Monitor production output to ensure all finished products consistently meet strict quality standards and client specifications.
- Workflow Optimization: Identify operational bottlenecks and implement process improvements to reduce waste and increase throughput.
- Management Liaison: Serve as the primary communication link, translating upper management goals into clear, actionable shop floor targets.
- Resource Planning: Coordinate with procurement and engineering to track material needs and maintain inventory levels.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing or metal fabrication environment.
- Leadership: 3+ years in a supervisory or management role leading a skilled trade workforce.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of welding processes, some machining operations, and metal fabrication techniques.
- Digital Literacy: Highly proficient in general computer applications, including advanced Excel for data tracking, Gantt charts for project scheduling, and ERP systems to manage shop floor workflow and inventory.
- Blueprint Literacy: Advanced competence in reading specifications, blueprints and schematics, combined with the ability to leverage CAD software to inspect and reference 3D design models
- Communication: Exceptional leadership and communication skills to effectively manage both floor staff and stakeholders.
- Problem Solving: Strong analytical and decision-making skills to resolve production bottlenecks in a fast-paced environment.
