Central Utility Services is a group of seven related companies providing utility and industrial services on Vancouver Island. We're hiring a Human Resources Manager to own the HR function across our entire group — a true one-person department for a practitioner who wants to run their own show.
Why this role is different
You won't be handed a task list, you'll write it. You'll build your own plans and priorities on a daily, weekly, and annual basis bring them to your direct supervisor for a quick yes or no, and then go execute. If you're an HR generalist who wants the independence to create programs, set up systems, and take charge across a group of companies, this is that opportunity.
This role has no direct reports and suits a strong manager who is accustomed to running a one-person Human Resources function in an industrial environment.
What you'll do
- Plan and execute HR work across the seven companies under the Central Utility Services umbrella, recommending, creating, and administering HR best practices, services, and programs
- Run full-cycle recruitment for all companies — from posting through offer letters, new-hire paperwork, and orientation
- Manage tracking of training completed in conjunction with safety manager
- Administer benefits for all companies, including working directly with our insurance carrier
- Advise supervisors and managers on employment standards, labour standards, and HR best practices
- Develop and manage company policies and procedures across many functional areas and assist other area managers with similar development
- Work within both unionized and non-unionized environments, including interpreting collective agreements and working with unions
- Facilitate the year-end performance review process — building the tools and timelines, coaching supervisors, and tracking completion across all companies
- Support supervisors and managers through disciplinary matters as they arise, including coaching, documentation, workplace investigations, and grievance responses in unionized settings
- Manage terminations and offboarding, including documentation, employment standards compliance, and exit interviews
- Take on assigned special projects, such as training and development programs
- Act as a communication advisor to leadership when required
What you bring
- CPHR designation, or ten or more years of relevant HR experience
- 4+ years running a one-person HR department
- Genuine generalist range, a jack-of-all-trades who is not beyond rolling up their sleeves for administrative detail
- Experience in both unionized and non-unionized environments, including collective agreement interpretation
- Solid working knowledge of BC employment standards and the judgment to advise managers on them
- Confident and assertive, yet diplomatic; results-oriented, driving initiatives from start to finish
- Strong organizational skills, critical thinking, and attention to detail
- Strong written communications skills
- Strong computer skills and superior knowledge of HRIS systems
- Experience with payroll is an asset, but not required
What we offer
- $90,000–$120,000 per year, depending on experience
- Comprehensive extended health benefits after three (3) months of continued employment
- Three (3) weeks paid annual vacation
