Job Summary
The CNC Tube Bender Operator is responsible for setting up, programming, and operating CNC tube-bending machines to produce hydraulic and mechanical tubing to print specifications. In addition to performing production duties, this position serves as the Afternoon Shift Lead Hand, providing day-to-day direction and support to the shift team, coordinating workflow, and assisting with production, quality, and safety objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Production
- Set up and operate CNC tube bending machines (e.g., Eaton, Pines, Unison, BLM, etc.)
- Load and run programs, make offsets, and adjust bend parameters as required
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, bend prints, and work orders
- Verify tubing dimensions, bend angles, and centerline lengths using measuring tools
- Perform first-off and in-process inspections to ensure quality standards are met
- Identify and correct issues related to springback, distortion, or material variation
- Handle tubing material safely and efficiently (steel, stainless, hydraulic tubing, etc.)
- Perform basic machine maintenance and report mechanical or tooling issues
- Meet production targets while maintaining quality and safety standards
- Maintain a clean and organized work area following 5S principles
Afternoon Shift Lead Hand Responsibilities
- Coordinate workflow and production priorities for the afternoon shift to meet daily schedules and customer requirements.
- Provide day-to-day guidance, training, and support to production employees, promoting teamwork and efficient operations.
- Assign work and monitor production progress, adjusting priorities as operational needs change.
- Assist with onboarding and training new employees on equipment, quality standards, safety procedures, and work practices.
- Monitor employee adherence to quality standards, safe work practices, and company policies, addressing concerns promptly and escalating issues to management when appropriate.
- Act as the primary point of contact for the afternoon shift, communicating production updates, equipment issues, material shortages, and staffing concerns to management.
- Coordinate shift handovers to ensure continuity between day and afternoon operations.
- Assist in troubleshooting production and equipment issues to minimize downtime.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to improve safety, quality, productivity, and efficiency.
- Complete or assist with production reports, shift documentation, and other operational records as required.
- Foster a positive, respectful, and collaborative work environment.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience operating CNC tube bending equipment (preferred)
- Previous experience acting as a Lead Hand or providing team leadership in a manufacturing environment is considered an asset
- Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings
- Understanding of tubing specifications (OD, wall thickness, bend radius, tolerances)
- Familiarity with measuring tools (calipers, protractors, tape, go/no-go gauges)
- Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Basic computer skills for CNC controls and production/job tracking systems
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Two or more years of experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment preferred
- Experience with hydraulic tubing or precision bending is an asset
- Previous Lead Hand, Team Lead, or supervisory experience is considered an asset
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift tubing and materials up to 50 lbs
- Manual dexterity for machine setup and inspection tasks
