Primary Purpose: The College of Agriculture and Bioresources is seeking an Sessional Instructor for AGRC 110.3 – Scientific Literacy and Communication for the Agricultural Sciences during the Fall Term 2026 academic session from September 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026. This course focuses on scientific and data literacy, communications, professionalism, ethics, transferable skills, and reflective learning.
Nature of Work:
Reporting to the Associate Dean Academic of College of Agriculture and Bioresources, the online facilitator will instruct, manage and deliver an online, asynchronous course using Canvas as well as organize and manage a weekly in-person tutorial and the teaching assistants that deliver the in-person tutorial. Responsibilities include guiding students through the course material, managing and grading assignments, and collaborating with the Office of the Vice President of Research (OVPR) in the delivery of a First Year Research Experience (FYRE) project. Some administrative preparation prior to September 2 is required such as hiring and training teaching assistants, and collaborating with the OVPR on organization of FYRE mentors and the FYRE project.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities:
- Ensures that the online class materials follow appropriate copyright reporting guidelines and policies and are up-to-date and available for student access prior to the start of term
- Maintains regular office hours for student inquiries regarding online course material, assignments and evaluation.
- Actively monitors and facilitates online group discussion activities (if applicable)
- Responds to student inquiries about course related concerns/needs in a timely and respectful manner via email and Canvas; and maintains virtual office hours
- Reports any concerns regarding student progress to the Associate Dean Academic
- Grades all assignments within one week of student submission and return to students with informative feedback
- Prepares and reports final marks
- Invigilates the final exam (if required)
- Provides feedback to the Associate Dean Academic regarding possible minor revision or corrections to online content
- Grade all assignments promptly (within one week) and provide constructive feedback
- Manage teaching assistants (approximately 5) in the delivery of a 1 hour weekly in-person tutorial to a maximum of 300 students
Education: Candidates are expected to hold a graduate degree, PhD preferred, in an area relevant to agriculture or the environment.
Experience: Facilitating or instructing on-line degree-level courses, and training and management of teaching assistants. Preference given to those candidates with previous experience teaching on-line AGRC courses using the Canvas Learning System. A relevant teaching position and/or experience teaching a course with related content will be considered.
Skills: Proficient computer applications and technology skills, including web-based course tool (Canvas Course Tools), word processing, email, internet, and other peripheral accessories and software programs; effective leadership, communication and teaching skills; ability to effectively interact, motivate and build relationships with a diverse student population; demonstrated ability to deal with multiple priorities and effectively organize time in a self-directed manner.
