The Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, well-balanced meals and snacks for residents and staff in accordance with the Canada Food Guide and any individual dietary needs. This role involves menu planning, food preparation, kitchen maintenance, and ensuring all food handling and safety regulations are met. The Cook contributes to the overall health and well-being of residents through quality meal service and a positive dining experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Meal Preparation and Service:
- Prepare and serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks according to the established menu and dietary guidelines.
- Ensure meals are appealing, nutritious, and served on time.
- Modify recipes or portions to accommodate special diets (e.g., diabetic, low-sodium, vegetarian).
- Maintain accurate portion control to reduce waste and manage costs.
Menu Planning and Inventory:
- Assist in planning weekly or monthly menus aligned with the Canada Food Guide and budget requirements.
- Maintain proper inventory levels of food and supplies; notify the supervisor of shortages.
- Receive and store food deliveries safely and efficiently.
Health and Safety Compliance:
- Follow all food safety, sanitation, and infection control standards.
- Keep kitchen, equipment, and dining areas clean and organized.
- Ensure safe operation of kitchen equipment and report maintenance issues promptly.
Teamwork and Communication:
- Work collaboratively with staff to meet the dietary needs of residents.
- Communicate effectively with team members regarding menu changes, resident preferences, or concerns.
- Participate in staff meetings and training sessions as required.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Food Handler Certification (required).
- Experience cooking in a residential, institutional, or healthcare setting (preferred).
- Knowledge of dietary guidelines, portion control, and menu planning.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Working Conditions:
- Fast-paced kitchen environment.
- Requires standing for extended periods and lifting up to 40 lbs.
- Flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays as needed.
