PURPOSE
The Geologist in Training will learn all surface mine geology tasks: pit wall geology mapping, coal sampling, exploration drilling plan and geology modelling. CST Coal will provide mentorship and training for this individual specific to this role.
ACCOUNTABILITY
This position initially reports to the Superintendent, Geotechnical and Geology. This individual will be creating updated weekly geology model through collaboration with geology, survey, and mine operations.
The Geologist in Training’s functions will include the following:
- Safety attitude and personal commitment to a zero incident workplace
- Knowledge of OH&S Mining Regulations and related legislation
- Providing field coal quality control in surface mining operations on a daily basis, including but not limited to; pit sampling, stockpile sampling, surveying of geological contacts.
- Liaison with operations to define coal contacts and to ensure the mined coal is directed to the appropriate areas.
- Maintain the coal quality database on a daily basis.
- Taking strike and dip measurements of lithological contacts within the progression of the Open Pit, surveying coal seam hanging wall and footwall contacts with the purposes of volumetric reconciliation, full seam trench sampling for the purposes of coal quality reconciliations.
- Working with geologists or external parties in exploration, including but not limited to; flagging drill pads/roads, core sampling, reclamation supervision.
- Construct and update of coal and waste models as directed.
- Set up sampling and trenching programs.
- Map hanging wall and footwall contacts as well as different lithological units.
- Assist with Exploration Programs
- Flag drill hole locations and mark dip and azimuth of hole.
- Routine check ins with drillers.
- Core sampling/lithological core logging/geotechnical core logging.
- Update drill hole / blast hole database.

Provide assistance to surveyors.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
A Geology or Geological Sciences degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.
Experience
The GIT is an entry level position although most graduates will have some form of field experience associated to their chosen field through summer and/or Coop placement.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Prior experience with surveying and outcrop mapping.
- Experience in open pit mine operations is a strong asset.
- Microsoft Office Packages (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Excellent work ethic and a self-starter possessing the ability to perform various jobs at various skill levels, with limited supervision
- Solid decision making and problem-solving skills.
- Prior experience with MineSight 3D (Hexagon Mining Software) or Deswik is a strong asset.
- Have a valid driving license.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The incumbent works at the CST Coal Mine Site facility. He/she is in an office setting 70% of the time and working outdoors 30% of the time and is exposed to chemicals or fumes and loud, continuous noise levels that require hearing protection. As a condition of employment, the incumbent is required to comply with pre-employment drug and alcohol testing as per the Company Drug and Alcohol Policy. As required, personal protective equipment will include the use of an approved hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots, hearing protection, CSA approved respiratory protection, protective clothing and gloves.
