Reporting to the Controller (Canada), with a dotted-line relationship to the Vice President (Edmonton), the Regional Controller will provide financial leadership for the Edmonton region. This role is responsible for overseeing all regional accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls while partnering closely with operational leadership. This is a hands-on leadership opportunity for a technically strong accounting professional who enjoys being actively involved in the day-to-day financial operations while developing and supporting a high-performing team.
Role Responsibilities
- Lead the day-to-day accounting function for the Edmonton region, including month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with ASPE and ensure compliance with accounting policies and internal controls.
- Partner with regional leadership to prepare budgets, forecasts, cash flow projections, strategic plans, cost estimates, and financial analysis.
- Review financial and operational performance, identify variances, and provide meaningful recommendations to support business decisions.
- Coordinate annual external audits and prepare year-end financial and tax information for Corporate.
- Review and coordinate legal documentation relating to land sales, transfers, agreements, mortgages, and letters of credit.
- Prepare financial proformas and analysis to support land acquisitions and purpose-built rental developments.
- Coach, mentor, and develop the Accounting Assistant while fostering a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
- Drive continuous improvement of accounting processes, reporting, and internal controls.
- Support special projects and provide financial guidance to operational and corporate leadership as required.
Role Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related discipline.
- CPA designation (Chartered Professional Accountant) required.
- 7–10+ years of progressive post-designation accounting experience, preferably within land development, real estate, construction, or a related project-based industry.
- Previous experience as a Controller or senior finance leader with responsibility for full-cycle accounting and financial reporting is considered an asset.
- Strong technical accounting knowledge, including ASPE, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, taxation, and financial reporting.
- Experience with ERP systems, preferably JD Edwards/Oracle; SharePoint experience is considered an asset.
- Hands-on leadership style with the ability to balance strategic thinking and day-to-day execution.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated commitment to team development, continuous improvement, and professional growth.
- Knowledge of the real estate or land development industry and an understanding of GST and corporate tax principles are considered strong assets.
- Valid passport with the ability to travel occasionally within Canada or the U.S. (approximately 1–2 trips per year).
Compensation
A comprehensive compensation plan will accompany the successful candidate including a comprehensive benefit plan. Starting salary range is based on experience and qualifications.
