About the Role
The Contractor Desk is the hub of our contractor business. As an Inside Sales Associate, you’ll be the go-to person for our contractor customers – processing their orders, arranging deliveries, handling their accounts, and making sure every interaction leaves them feeling looked after. For many of our contractors, you’re the first and last person they deal with, so building strong, trusted relationships is at the heart of what you do.
This role sits at the intersection of sales, customer service, and operations, so you’ll need to be organized, knowledgeable, and comfortable juggling multiple priorities at once. You’ll work closely with the Contractor Sales team, shipping department, and the rest of the store to make sure orders flow smoothly from quote to delivery.
What You’ll Be Doing
-
Greeting all customers in a friendly manner within 10 seconds of their arrival
-
Assisting contractor and walk-in customers with product selection, using your product knowledge to recommend the right materials for their projects
-
Writing up orders, estimates, and transfers for the Contractor Sales team
-
Processing special orders from customers
-
Invoicing customers with charge accounts accurately and efficiently
-
Scanning items and collecting payments, ensuring prices and quantities are correct
-
Processing all transactions quickly and professionally
-
Coordinating deliveries with the shipping department and completing all associated paperwork accurately
-
Answering phones, taking messages, and following up to ensure nothing falls through the cracks
-
Facing shelves and doing minor stock replenishment within the contactor desk perimeter when not serving customers
-
Staying proactively informed on promotions, product availability, and any changes that could affect contractor orders
-
Collaborating with the Contractor Sales team and other departments to ensure a seamless experience for every customer
What We’re Looking For
This role is a step up from general retail – it suits someone with some lumber or building materials experience who’s ready to take on more responsibility. Here’s what will set you up for success:
-
Prior lumber yard, building materials, or retail experience – product knowledge is essential in this role
-
A genuine passion for customer service and building long-term relationships with contractor clients
-
Strong numeracy and accuracy when handling invoicing, accounts, payments, and credit authorizations
-
Excellent organizational skills – you can manage multiple orders, priorities, and customer needs at the same time without dropping the ball
-
A self-motivated, proactive work style – you don’t wait to be told what needs doing
-
A collaborative team player who communicates clearly with sales, shipping, and store colleagues
-
Excellent listening, communication, and interpersonal skills
-
Detail oriented with a strong commitment to safe work practices
-
Comfort with computers and point-of-sale or order management systems (experience with Epicor Eagle is an asset)
