THE COMPANY:
Nova Harvest Ltd is a young, fast-paced business producing high quality shellfish seed stock since 2011, and currently focused on expanding into a vertically integrated shellfish producer – from egg to plate. We are seeking an energetic, career-minded individual to manage all aspects of farm development and production on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Nova Harvest Ltd. knows that oysters are one of the most environmentally responsible protein sources in the world and our mission is to develop a company that produces it at scale.
THE FARM:
Nova Harvest Ltd., in partnership with Huu-ay-aht Group of Businesses (HGB), has embarked on a multi-year project to improve the sustainability of the shellfish aquaculture industry by building, modifying, adapting and designing automated processes for oyster aquaculture. Together Nova and HGB have created a scalable, efficient oyster farming business and look to increase sustainable seafood production in the Barkley Sound.
As we continue to develop our shellfish tenures within Barkley Sound, we are looking for someone who is not afraid to try and do things differently as we continually improve and refine our farm process together. We view future success in shellfish aquaculture will come through innovation and this is the core of our decisions making.
Our goal is to build the most efficient deep-water oyster production process possible, and we need a creative, flexible, driven, and organized farm manager to help us get there.
THE JOB:
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting and collaborating with the General Manager, the Farm Manager will:
- Build, construct, troubleshoot, and maintain farm production systems, equipment and boats
- Manage marine operations including equipment installation/operation and overall shellfish production
- Coordinate with hatchery and nursery management to achieve production goals
- Maintain accurate and organized daily records of production, monitoring, and farm activities
- Develop, innovate, and refine production techniques
- Ensure compliance with licencing and regulatory requirements
- Supervise farm staff, ensuring a positive work environment that is safe and productive.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- The candidate should have experience in a commercial-scale aquaculture farm or relevant marine experience.
- The candidate should have a demonstrated competence and confidence with the installation, operation and maintenance of a variety of aquaculture/marine systems, boats and mechanized infrastructure.
- The candidate should be able to effectively train and manage farm personnel and maintain a cooperative team environment.
- They must have a positive attitude and work well under pressure.
- The successful candidate must be self-motivated, resourceful, organized, detail -oriented and above all have excellent problem-solving, communication skills and an expert of knots.
This position requires a high degree of physical fitness and comfort working in a marine environment, on the water, in all kinds of weather conditions. Experience operating marine boats and SVOP certification is desired. Within a work week the candidate would be installing long lines, splitting oysters, preforming maintenance on gear and preparing an order for harvest. The candidate will be working in a fast-paced environment where problem solving, troubleshooting, and innovating are skills tested daily.

Nova Harvest is located in beautiful Bamfield B.C., on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It has a small but active and welcoming community. Community is important to us and Bamfield is a special one to be a part of. Candidates should be aware that Bamfield has a population of <300 people and is located 75km away from the nearest town at the end of a logging road. If you like hiking, fishing, exploring the rocky intertidal, remote islands and beautiful beaches Bamfield is the place for you.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
This is a permanent, full-time position. The salary is commensurate with education and experience. The basic work-week is 40 hrs but the candidate must be able to work a flexible schedule as some overtime and weekend work will be required.
