Yekooche First Nation is looking for an enthusiastic, collaborative person to provide essential accounting support for Yekooche members as we grow our business and social programs into a bright future. We’re a small Nation – with big ideas – located a scenic three-hour drive west of Prince George. Almost half the members live on these reserve lands while others live in Prince George, Fort St James and other communities in British Columbia. Our finance and administrative office is in Prince George.
Job Description - Accountant
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for ensuring the day-to-day accounting activities of the Yekooche First Nation (payables, receivables, payroll, etc) are made appropriately and that all financial transactions are correctly recorded and reported. Ensures excellent preparation for, and successful completion of, the annual financial reports and audits of the Yekooche First Nation Government and its programs.
The successful candidate will have the skills and experience necessary to generate, maintain and analyze the financial details of the organization including:
· Excellent knowledge of finance and accounting practices, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
· Budget Preparation and Forecasting
· Familiarity with and practical use of Public/ Fund/ Restricted Fund Accounting and reporting
· Knowledge of the Indian Act and CRA laws and regulations, particularly as they pertain to First Nations
· Strong organizational skills
· Excellent analytical skills
· Strong time management skills
· Good communication skills
In addition, the successful candidate will be:
· Ready to manage a team and demonstrate leadership skills
· Amenable to responding to requests for particular financial information as needed from time to time by the Executive Director and/or Chief and Council.
· Adaptable to different working environments and acquainted, or willing to become acquainted, with the various industries/ sectors which have business transactions with First Nations
Day-to-day duties
· Verify receipts, payments and otherwise monitor all financial transactions
· Verify accuracy of ledger entries, and other foundational financial documents of the organization
· Oversee procurement and contracting practices in accordance with Yekooche policies
· Prepare monthly financial statements for presentation to the Executive Director and/or Chief and Council
· Prepare budgets (annual for the organization and its departments, as well as specific for funding applications and programs) and monitor expenditures to relevant budgets
· Prepare financial documents as required for reporting to other governments and funding agencies
· Develop reporting standards for future use within the organization
· Work with external auditors, prepare audit reports
· Prepare income tax or information returns as needed
· Supervise accounting clerks or Junior Accountants
· Liaise with program and other Yekooche staff to move organizational work forward efficiently
Qualifications
· Post-secondary qualification
· Accounting designation
· 5-7 years’ experience working in an accounting position
