Climbing Wall & Climbing Camp Volunteers assist instructors with facilitating children’s climbing lessons, children’s climbing camps, and open climbing times for all ages. General duties and responsibilities include engaging with participants, belaying climbers, and providing a safe and fun atmosphere.
Responsibilities:
- Arrive on time and ready for shift wearing proper uniform.
- Be aware of the environment and have appropriate safety awareness and judgement.
- Belay patrons in a safe and controlled way.
- Look over any lesson plans and be aware of the activities scheduled for each day.
- Welcome participants and customers as they enter the space or program.
- Actively participate in all activities and interact positively with climbers of all ages.
- Providing assistance to participants in developing and practicing new skills.
- Help patrons in and out of harnesses as assigned by the climbing wall staff.
- Assist staff in making the climbing wall a safe and fun environment during programs, camps, and open times.
- Assist with the set-up and take-down of any equipment associated with the climbing wall.
- Help with cleaning climbing wall and camp areas and supplies throughout each day.
- Be helpful and courteous to staff and customers – direct patrons if they have any questions.
- Be aware of all safety and emergency procedures.
- Be willing and adaptable to learning new processes and following procedures.
- Supervise participants and ensure they are following safety rules and guidelines.
- Assist by being a great role model: listen to the leader(s), sit with the group during instructions, and model appropriate behaviour.
- Help with any demonstrations or instructions as requested by camp leader(s).
- Provide positive feedback and guidance to participants.
- Regularly check messages and maintain communication with supervisors.
- Be responsible for logging hours on appropriate time sheets.
- Attend all volunteer meetings and training sessions as assigned.
- Climb the wall during non-busy times to practice skills and become familiar with route layouts.
- Be enthusiastic and bring energy to every shift!
Work Term:
- July 02 – September 02, 2026
- Minimum commitment of 2 climbing lessons or open climbing time shifts per week.
- Weekdays and Weekends.
- Day and evening hours - Approximately 4 hours/week.
- Minimum commitment of 1 week of climbing wall camps
- Monday – Friday.
- 8:30 – 4:30pm – Approximately 40 hours.

Qualifications/ Skills Required:
- Between 13 and 17 years of age.
- Completion of a minimum of Emergency First Aid with CPR-C, or Lifesaving Society Bronze Medallion.
- Completion of Volunteer Training – Provided by Westside.
- Completion of Westside Belay Test.
Mandatory Training
Climbing Wall & Climbing Camp Volunteers are required to attend the following training dates.
- Friday June 12th (evening)
- Saturday June 13th (full day)
- Sunday June 14th (full day)
- Saturday June 27th 11:00 – 2:00pm
All 4 training sessions are mandatory and must be fully attended.
