About Us

As part of the Western Centre for Research on Migration and Ethnic Relations, the Pathways to Prosperity is a national partnership focused on immigration which includes all key federal and provincial migration ministries; municipalities; national, regional, and local organizations involved in newcomer settlement; and researchers from over fifty universities. The main activities of the Partnership are primary and secondary research, knowledge transfer, education, and mutual learning.

Responsibilities

Reporting to and under the guidance of the Principal Investigator of the Pathways to Prosperity (P2P) Partnership, the Communications Officer will be responsible for carrying out a variety of communication-related tasks including:

Conference planning and connecting with conference venues and suppliers (e.g., virtual interpreters, printers)
Maintain conference website and virtual platform
Complete conference tasks including solicit sponsors and exhibitors, maintain online registration, design agenda booklets, design other conference materials, supervise volunteers onsite
Coordinate all conference AV including onsite and virtual aspects to ensure seamless production of the on-site event and live broadcast of the virtual platform
Film interviews with a multi-camera setup and produce high quality videos, including insertion of slides
Run virtual workshop series on zoom, including recording and posting
Organize one-day in person workshops in various locations in Canada
Stay up-to-date with event industry trends and introduce new technologies and applications to meet the events’ objectives
Track and report key conference and workshop metrics such as number of registrants, attendees, hits on the virtual website, downloads of materials, etc.
Maintain and build relationships with local and national media
Prepare press releases, write op-eds, and create media toolkits about P2P research and events
Monitor the success of media relations by tracking the coverage received
Graphic design, formatting documents
Develop communications resources such as social media toolkits and presentation templates to support P2P stakeholders
Track and analyze social media and website metrics
Other duties as required

Qualifications

Education:

Undergraduate Degree or College Diploma with a major in event management, communications, media, public relations, or related field

Experience:

1-2 years in a communications role coordinating and implementing conferences and communications functions, processes and projects

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:

In-depth knowledge of e-communications tools including website and graphic design principles and software such as Canva, Photoshop, InDesign, and Adobe Premiere for video editing
In-depth knowledge of conference websites, including Pheedloop
In-depth knowledge of social media platforms and their use
In-depth knowledge of project management tools and resources preferred
Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred
Effective communications skills, with the ability to develop and write strategic communications plans Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes, and support work beyond one’s own unit
Compelling and persuasive communication skills to engage individuals and teams inside and outside the University
Project management skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously from conception to completion within tightly prescribed timelines
Ability to apply creativity, innovation, and resourcefulness to daily work, and recommend strategies for engagement initiatives in response to cultural and social trends
Ability to use a non-prescriptive approach in marketing and communications initiatives
Ability to use market research information to improve and enhance communications to target audiences in support of the brand
Attention to detail and proofreading abilities with an excellent command of the English language
Computer skills with the ability to learn and use relevant software that achieves required outcomes and is in line with best practices, intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
Results-oriented with an ability to handle numerous tasks
Ability to develop strategies that are in line with the Faculty’s and the University’s mission and which balance competing priorities
Team player with the ability to work collaboratively and actively contribute in meetings and in team settings
