Position Overview
The Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial operations within a production and distribution facility. This is a player-coach role ideal for someone who seeks solutions to challenges and takes pride in accuracy, ownership, and continuous improvement.
The Controller will lead accounting functions, manage internal controls, support operational leadership, and provide strategic financial insight to drive profitability and sustainable growth. This role requires a strong analytical mindset who is comfortable rolling up their sleeves to manage month-end close, prepare and review financials, handle accounting matters, manage cash flow, and lead special projects, while also mentoring and developing a small team.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting
· Own and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness
· Prepare and/or review journal entries; reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly
· Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with ASPE
· Maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
Accounting Operations
· Oversee general ledger, AP, AR, payroll, and fixed assets
· Resolve complex accounting issues and transaction-level questions
· Ensure compliance with tax, audit, and regulatory requirements
· Coordinate with external accountants, tax advisors, and other third parties
Cash Flow Management
· Manage cash flow forecasting and working capital needs
· Monitor liquidity, banking relationships, and debt compliance
· Provide clear visibility into short and long-term cash positions
Financial Analysis
· Perform detailed variance analysis to review with leadership
· Prepare management reporting, dashboards, and ad-hoc analysis
· Support budgeting, forecasting, and operational decision-making
Inventory, Purchasing & Cost Management
· Oversee inventory accounting, costing, reconciliation, valuation and controls
· Monitor inventory turns, slow-moving and obsolete inventory
· Work closely with operations, purchasing and production teams regarding inventory planning and demand forecasting
· Support landed cost analysis including freight, duties, currency impacts and supplier pricing
· Improve reporting around margins by product line, project and customer segment
Foreign Exchange & International Purchasing
· Monitor foreign currency exposure arising from European purchasing activities
· Assist management in evaluating hedging strategies and currency risk mitigation
· Analyze FX impacts on margins, inventory valuation and cash flow planning
· Support vendor payment planning and international banking relationships
AI Adoption & Financial Systems Innovation
· Lead the adoption and integration of AI, automation, and financial technologies to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability within the accounting function
· Identify opportunities to streamline reporting, reconciliations, forecasting, and other financial processes through automation and digital tools
· Support the implementation and optimization of accounting, ERP, and business intelligence systems to improve operational visibility and decision-making
· Establish appropriate controls and governance surrounding AI-assisted financial processes and reporting
· Champion a culture of continuous improvement and innovation through the thoughtful use of technology and process enhancement
· Train and support internal team members in the effective and responsible use of AI and automation tools within finance operations
Special Projects
· Lead and support special initiatives such as system enhancements and integrations, and process redesign and improvements, including use of technology to support efficient operations
· Act as a finance partner to cross-functional teams on strategic projects
Leadership & Mentoring
· Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff in alignment with the company Vision, Mission and Values … foster a culture of accountability and growth
· Set clear expectations, review performance, and support career development
· Promote process improvement, efficiency, and best practices across the team
Qualifications
· CPA Designation
· 5+ years of experience in financial management
· Advanced knowledge of Excel and financial analysis
· QuickBooks knowledge and experience
