Overview
Protection Security Investigations is seeking a highly alert and enforcement-capable Security Guard for a high-risk retail grocery environment. This role focuses on theft deterrence, active intervention, and maintaining control of the property.
Guards at this location are expected to take a proactive approach to loss prevention, including lawful intervention, arrests when required, and enforcement of property rules. This is not a passive observation role — it requires confidence, sound judgment, and a strong understanding of applicable legislation.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain a high-visibility presence at entrances, exits, and key store areas to deter theft and disorder
- Conduct routine and irregular patrols of the store and surrounding property
- Identify, deter, and intervene in theft-related incidents, including shoplifting and fraud
- Conduct lawful arrests in accordance with the Criminal Code of Canada (citizen’s arrest provisions) when required
- Enforce the Trespass to Property Act (Ontario), including issuing trespass notices and removing prohibited individuals
- Respond to incidents involving theft, mischief, vandalism, and disturbances
- Utilize CCTV footage for evidence review and report documentation (no active monitoring required)
- Complete detailed incident reports, statements, and evidence documentation in accordance with PSI standards
- Liaise with store management and police when incidents require escalation
- Support safe store operations, including opening/closing presence and maintaining order during peak hours
- Monitor for and address safety hazards or suspicious activity
Core Competencies
Strong working knowledge of:
- Trespass to Property Act (Ontario)
- Criminal Code of Canada (theft, mischief, vandalism, citizen’s arrest)
- Proven ability to identify theft behavior and act decisively
- Confidence in physical presence and verbal control
- Strong report writing and evidence documentation skills
- Ability to remain calm, professional, and controlled in high-pressure situations
- Situational awareness and sound decision-making under liability
Qualifications
- Valid Ontario Security Guard Licence
- Valid First Aid & CPR Certification (required)
- Experience in retail security or loss prevention strongly preferred
- Ability to legally and confidently conduct arrests when required
- Physically capable of extended patrols and rapid response
Working Conditions
- High-theft, high-activity retail environment
- Frequent interaction with non-compliant or confrontational individuals
- Requires constant alertness and mobility
- Shifts may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
