Gobind Sarvar School, Edmonton is seeking a reliable, flexible, and student-focused Substitute Teacher / Instructor to provide classroom coverage when regular teachers are absent.
This is an on-call position, with assignments offered based on the school’s staffing and operational needs. There are no guaranteed hours or regular shifts. Substitute Teachers/Instructors may be contacted when coverage is required and may accept assignments based on their availability.
The successful candidate will maintain a safe, respectful, and positive learning environment while delivering lessons and activities based on the plans provided by the regular classroom teacher.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide classroom coverage for teachers who are absent.
- Accept and attend on-call assignments based on availability.
- Follow lesson plans, classroom routines, and instructions provided by the regular teacher.
- Deliver lessons and learning activities in an engaging and age-appropriate manner.
- Maintain a safe, respectful, inclusive, and positive classroom environment.
- Supervise students and ensure their safety and well-being.
- Apply effective classroom management strategies.
- Support students with their learning and encourage active participation.
- Adapt instructional approaches and activities based on student needs.
- Take attendance and maintain classroom records as required.
- Monitor student engagement, behaviour, and completion of assigned work.
- Communicate significant student, classroom, behavioural, or safety concerns to school administration.
- Follow all school policies, procedures, and expectations.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, staff, and school information.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, support staff, students, and families.
- Complete classroom supervision and other duties assigned by school administration.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) is required.
- Prior teaching experience in a school setting is required.
- Experience working with elementary or secondary students is preferred.
- Previous experience as a substitute teacher or instructor is an asset.
- Valid Alberta teaching certification is preferred/required where applicable to the assignment.
- Strong classroom management and student engagement skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to follow lesson plans and adapt instruction to different grades and subjects.
- Ability to work independently and respond effectively to changing classroom needs.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Reliable, punctual, flexible, and available to accept on-call assignments as needed.
- Successful completion of required background checks and school screening requirements.
- Commitment to student safety, confidentiality, and professional conduct.

Working Conditions
- Casual, on-call position.
