OVERVIEW
Working as a member of the inter-professional team for weekend coverage, the PTA/OTA assistant supports patients with treatment modalities under the direction of the Physiotherapists. They assist patients with mobility and maintaining/improving their functional level. This role reports to the Manager Professional Practice. This role will primarily work on weekends covering acute medicine or general surgery units. The weekend Physiotherapy/occupational therapy assistant is scheduled for one Saturday and Sunday shift out of every 4 weekends. Where there is a statutory holiday, this holiday is included in as part of the long weekend.
Education
- Graduate from a recognized Community College OT/PT Assistant program.
Qualifications
- 2 years acute care hospital based experience required.
- Experience in medicine, surgery and geriatric care required.
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
- Candidates with experience with orthopaedic and cardiorespiratory care will be given preference.
- Ability to modify interventions quickly in accordance to changes in patient status required.
- Ability to carry out directions of therapists.
- Independent decision making skills required.
- Exceptional patient centered care skills required.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to function as an effective interdisciplinary team member.
- Willingness to participate/lead health service councils and professional groups.
- Motivated to practice in accordance with the mission and vision of hospital/health service.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and personal development.
- Evening and weekend shifts may be necessary.
- Good work and attendance record required.
