Role Overview
You will be responsible for designing, improving, and supporting conveyor systems from concept through production.
You are expected to:
- Work independently on designs
- Collaborate closely with fabrication and assembly teams
- Solve real-world problems during builds
- Continuously improve designs using Lean principles
Key ResponsibilitiesMechanical Design (Core Role)
- Design conveyor systems and custom equipment using SolidWorks
- Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and production drawings
- Develop BOMs and release packages for manufacturing
- Design for manufacturability (DFM) and assembly (DFA)
- Review and improve existing designs for efficiency and cost reduction
- Ensure proper tolerancing, fits, and mechanical function
Project Ownership
- Take ownership of design scope from concept to release
- Work with internal stakeholders to define requirements and constraints
- Support quoting and concept development with preliminary designs
- Manage revisions and drawing control
Shop & Production Integration
- Work directly with shop team to validate designs during builds
- Troubleshoot issues on the floor and implement design fixes
- Support assembly, fit-up, and testing of conveyors
- Ensure designs reflect real-world fabrication processes (cutting, bending, welding, machining)
Continuous Improvement (Lean Focus)
- Identify inefficiencies in designs and processes
- Standardize components and assemblies where possible
- Apply principles from 2 Second Lean to eliminate waste
- Contribute to design libraries and reusable systems
QualificationsRequired
- 3–7 years of mechanical design experience
- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks
- Experience creating production-ready drawings (not just models)
- Solid understanding of mechanical systems and fabrication methods
- Ability to think through full build process (not just design intent)
- Strong problem-solving and ownership mindset
Preferred
- Experience with conveyor systems or material handling equipment
- Background in fabrication, machining, or hands-on mechanical work
- Familiarity with sheet metal, weldments, and structural design
- Experience working in a manufacturing or job shop environment
- Exposure to Autodesk Fusion 360 (nice to have)
What Success Looks Like
- Designs are buildable without rework
- Shop team can execute your drawings with minimal clarification
- Problems are solved before they hit the floor
- Continuous improvements are made to reduce cost, time, and errors
- You become a go-to technical resource for conveyor design
