The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) invites applications for the role of Manager, Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), an exciting leadership opportunity that will play a critical role in supporting the University's long-term financial sustainability and strategic priorities.
Reporting to the Vice-President Finance and Administration, the Manager, Financial Planning & Analysis serves as a trusted advisor to academic and administrative leaders across the institution. In this senior finance leadership role, you will lead the University's budgeting and financial planning functions, providing expert guidance on budgeting, forecasting, financial modelling, business cases, and strategic resource allocation. You will also lead a team of Senior Financial Analysts and work collaboratively with leaders across the University to ensure financial resources are aligned with institutional priorities and support informed decision-making.
Responsibilities
- Strategic and Operational Planning - Leading annual budgeting, financial planning, and multi-year forecasting. Providing strategic financial advice to senior leadership. Aligning financial planning with institutional priorities including enrolment, workforce, capital, and strategic initiatives. Driving improvements in budgeting, forecasting, and reporting processes.
- People Leadership - Leading and developing a team of Senior Financial Analysts. Building an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing team culture. Supporting professional growth, well-being, and workplace safety. Building strong relationships across the University and with external stakeholders. Supporting change management and continuous improvement.
- Finance and Budget - Developing budgets, forecasts, costing methodologies, and financial models. Monitoring financial performance and supporting data-driven decision-making. Conducting scenario analysis related to enrolment, funding, tuition, and revenues. Preparing and presenting financial reports and recommendations to senior leadership and the Board.
- Risk Management - Identifying and mitigating financial risks. Ensuring compliance with policies, legislation, funding requirements, and collective agreements.
- Technology and Financial Transformation - Supporting financial systems modernization and enhancing reporting, forecasting, and analytics tools. Leveraging data and technology to improve financial decision-making.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess an undergraduate degree in Business, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, or a related field, along with a recognized professional accounting designation (CPA). A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, finance, budgeting, forecasting, and staff supervision within a complex unionized environment is required. Experience in a post-secondary institution or broader public-sector environment is considered a strong asset.
Relevant knowledge, skills, and experience must include:
- Exceptional verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
- Thorough knowledge of Canadian public sector accounting standards, cost accounting principles, and fund accounting.
- Demonstrated experience in budgeting, forecasting, financial modelling, business case development, and long-range financial planning.
- Experience presenting financial information to senior executives, boards, committees, or governing bodies.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate financial and technical concepts effectively to diverse audiences.
- High levels of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
- Strong computer application skills, including data extraction, cleansing, transformation, relational databases, and quantitative analysis.
- Advanced expertise with Excel, Power BI, Tableau, Banner reporting tools, or similar financial analytics and business intelligence platforms.
- Experience developing financial models, institutional costing methodologies, and long-range financial forecasts within a complex public-sector environment.

Salary
The starting salary will be determined with consideration of the successful candidate's relevant education, skills, and experience. The annual salary range for this position is $102,152.07 to $113,502.30. The position is located in Prince George Campus.
