Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled CNC Machinist to join our precision mold manufacturing team. This role is critical to ensuring the accuracy, efficiency, and quality of mold machining operations. The ideal candidate will have hands-on CNC machining experience, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to continuous improvement in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Machining Setup, Operation & Programming
- Set up, program, and operate 3 and 5 axis CNC machines
- Program all required machining operations using PowerMill or Tebis CAM Software.
- Execute both 3D and 2D machining operations in mold components of various materials.
- Perform complete job setups using FCS, vises, magnets and other work holding methods.
- Safely operate overhead cranes to load and unload large workpieces.
Process Planning & Optimization
- Read and interpret CAD files, blueprints, mold designs, and technical drawings.
- Ensure all machine and employee hours are accurately logged through scheduling system.
- Determine the most efficient order of operations for machining and drilling to maximize unattended runtime and throughput.
- Develop and implement machining strategies to optimize Cycle times, Tool life, Machine utilization.
- Continuously identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and reduce waste.
Tooling Management
- Select appropriate cutting tools based on material and application.
- Monitor and manage tool wear and tool life to maintain quality and efficiency.
- Communicate tooling requirements, shortages, or issues to team leaders or supervisors.
Quality Inspection & Control
- Perform in-process and final inspections using probes, gauges and precision measuring instruments.
- Complete all required completion checklists.
- Ensure all parts meet surface finish and dimensional requirements.
- Document inspection results and report any deviations or non-conformances.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Perform routine machine maintenance to ensure optimal performance.
- Conduct weekly oil top-ups and preventive maintenance checks.
- Monitor machine operation and respond to alarms and malfunctions.
- Submit shop support tickets for unresolved issues.
- Assist service technicians with machine diagnostics and repairs when required.
Safety, Organization & Compliance
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work cell.
- Follow all health, safety, and environmental procedures.
- Ensure safe operation of machines, cranes, and tooling systems.
- Use required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) at all times.
- Participate in continuous improvement and safety initiatives.
Inventory & Documentation
- Maintain accurate records of Tooling usage, Maintenance activities and production output.
- Monitor and manage inventory levels of tooling and consumables.
- Ensure proper documentation of programs, setups, and process changes.
Reporting Structure:
- Reporting directly to the CNC Supervisor
Performance Metrics (Illustrative):
Production & Efficiency
- Machine Utilization Rate >80%
- On-Time Job Completion: Meet or exceed established machine budget
- Setup Time Efficiency: Meet or exceed established benchmarks
- Cycle Time Reduction: Continuous improvement in machining efficiency
- Unattended Runtime: Achieve productive unattended machining to align with Machine Utilization Rate.
Quality
- First-Pass Yield (FPY)
- Scrap/Rework Rate
- Accuracy: Consistent adherence to tolerance specifications
- Complete all required in process quality checks and checklists
Tooling & Process Control
- Tool Life Optimization: Reduced premature tool wear
- Tooling Availability: Minimal downtime due to tooling issues
- Number of implemented process improvements
- Number of premature tooling failures
Safety
- Zero lost-time incidents
- Full compliance with safety procedures and audits
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety on the shop floor.
Team Contribution
- Effective communication with team leaders and technicians
- Timely and accurate reporting (support tickets, inspections, logs)
- Participation in continuous improvement initiatives
Required Qualifications:
- 4+ years of CNC machining experience including CAM programming.
- Strong ability to read and interpret detailed engineering drawings and GD&T.
- Proficient in using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and other precision inspection tools.
- Familiarity with machining large, complex mold components to tight tolerances.
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of machining principles.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments.
- Proactive, problem-solving mindset with a focus on quality and efficiency.
- Ability to work independently and thrive in a cross-functional shop floor environment.
Working Environment and Schedule:
- Manufacturing plant with exposure to noise, machinery, and industrial equipment.
- The position is a swing shift role with overtime required by workload.
- Use of PPE is mandatory.
- Fast-paced, detail-oriented environment requiring proactive problem-solving and strong communication
