Overview
Vernon Muslim Association – Vernon, BC
Position: Full-Time Imam
Salary: CA$4,000.00 per month + single person accommodation
Vacation: 2 weeks paid annually. All stat holidays off on Mondays.
Contract: 1 year with possibility of extension.
Duties
- Lead 5 daily prayers every day except for Wednesdays and Thursdays.
- Deliver relevant and community context-aware Friday sermons that are clear, relevant, and rooted in authentic Islamic teachings, and lead Friday Jummah prayers weekly. The Friday sermon and the prayer must be completed within 30 minutes. Also, the large part of the khutbah must be in English except for the necessary Arabic parts, to cater to the needs of the majority of the audience in attendance.
- Deliver 2-4 community lectures per month, held on Friday or Sunday evenings (before or after Maghrib or Isha prayer, depending on the season).
- Teach Qur’an (recitation, tajweed, tafsir, and memorization) and Islamic studies to youth and adults of all backgrounds.
- Lead and/or participate when needed in fundraising efforts for the masjid.
- Lead Taraweeh prayers, deliver a short reminder after 4 units of prayer, and complete the entire Qur'an during Taraweeh in Ramadan.
- Lead two Eid prayers.
- Lead Janazah prayers and the ghusl.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Commitment to the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā‘ah.
- Fluency in Qur’ānic recitation with proper tajwid.
- Hifdh of Qur’ān (preferred).
- A Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Studies, Shariah, or a related field from a reputable university.
- Experience delivering Friday khutbahs, lectures, or Islamic reminders in English.
- Open to recognized scholarly differences in fiqh and respectful of diverse madhhab-based perspectives.`
- Prior experience in teaching Qur’an to children and adults.
- Patient, approachable, and supportive with community members of all ages.
- Applicants must be legally eligible to work in Canada. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
As part of this agreement, if you are unable to fulfill any of the scheduled tasks, we kindly ask that you inform the board at least 12 hours in advance so the community can be notified. The management board also reserves the right to review and adjust the monthly salary with proper notice (4 weeks) if the responsibilities outlined in the contract are not being carried out.
