OVERVIEW
We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Application Developer with a strong background in enterprise application development and legacy system modernization to support critical Retail Investments initiatives within a large-scale financial services environment. The successful candidate will work closely with technology teams, business stakeholders, and operations partners to design, develop, maintain, and enhance mainframe applications that support core business functions and operational stability.
This role is ideal for a technically strong and detail-oriented professional who thrives in structured enterprise environments, has experience supporting complex mainframe ecosystems, and is comfortable working across both project delivery and production support functions.
Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid – Tuesday & Thursday in office, subject to change)
Contract Length: 3 Months (Strong possibility of extension or FTE conversion within 2–3 months)
Hours: 7.5 Hours Daily
Pay: T4: $40 / IC: $46
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, develop, test, and maintain mainframe applications aligned with business objectives, enterprise architecture standards, and technology strategy.
- Translate business and technical requirements into scalable, maintainable, and high-quality application solutions.
- Develop and support applications using COBOL, CICS, PL/1, JCL, DB2, and VSAM technologies within a z/OS environment.
- Perform system analysis to evaluate impacts across upstream and downstream systems, interfaces, and dependencies.
- Support production stability through root cause analysis, incident resolution, troubleshooting, and defect remediation.
- Ensure applications meet enterprise standards related to security, resiliency, logging, operational stability, and performance.
- Participate in code reviews, testing activities, deployment support, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with business, infrastructure, QA, and application teams to support project delivery and operational priorities.
- Contribute to modernization efforts and evaluate opportunities for process, system, and technology improvements.
- Document technical specifications, system changes, and development activities within Jira, Confluence, and related enterprise tools.
- Mentor junior team members and contribute to knowledge sharing and development best practices.
- Support ongoing maintenance, enhancement requests, and release activities across the application portfolio.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 3–5+ years of progressive mainframe application development experience within enterprise environments.
- Strong hands-on experience with COBOL, CICS, PL/1, JCL, DB2, and VSAM.
- Experience working within z/OS environments supporting enterprise-scale applications.
- Familiarity with EASYTRIEVE and FOCUS reporting/query tools.
- Experience using Jira, Confluence, and ServiceNow for development tracking, documentation, and operational support activities.
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycle methodologies and enterprise application support practices.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex production issues and perform detailed root cause analysis.
- Experience analyzing system dependencies, integration points, and application impacts across enterprise environments.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical documentation skills.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in fast-paced environments.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred
- Exposure to AI technologies, automation initiatives, or mainframe modernization programs.
- Experience with CSF Designer is considered an asset.
- Prior experience working within financial services, banking, or highly regulated enterprise environments.
- Experience contributing to development standards, reusable frameworks, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Knowledge of enterprise security, resiliency, and operational support best practices.
EDUCATION
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Equivalent practical experience in enterprise mainframe development environments will also be considered.
