Position Summary:
As a member of Foothills Country Hospice Society (FCHS), this individual – an experienced, certified Health Care Aide, preferably with palliative experience, provides direct care to residents and families under the guidance of the Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse. The Health Care Aide will work as part of the clinical team, to provide excellence in palliative care in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards to ensure resident and family safety is a priority.
Position Responsibilities Include:
- Providing direct resident care in a team environment and demonstrating excellent pain and symptom assessment skills with timely management within the Health Care Aide (HCA) scope of practice.
- In association with other team members, providing high quality hospice palliative care for residents and their families.
- Providing direct personal care related to resident hygiene, nutrition and elimination.
- Assisting with safe resident ambulation, lifting and positioning in accordance with appropriate policies and procedures.
- Consulting/collaborating with other health care professionals within the Hospice team.
- Documenting relevant information in a timely and accurate manner.
- Being a positive role model for other employees, volunteers, residents and families.
- Assuming other related duties as assigned by the Registered Nurse and Clinical Leadership Team.
- Completing required learning modules and competencies including Medication Assistance.
- Completing required annual self assessment.
- Participating in post death care and bereavement support for families.
- Assuming other related duties as assigned by the Clinical Manager.

Schedule: Casual – days, evenings, nights, weekdays, weekends
Minimum Requirements:
- Completed certified Health Care Aide course.
- Current BLS Health Care Provider CPR.
- Preference will be given to individuals with palliative care experience.
- Must be willing to participate in educational advancement within the palliative care field.
- Availability to actively participate in team meetings and quality improvement activities.
- Knowledge about, and committed to, the Hospice Mission, Vision and Values.
- Awareness of one’s own limitations and strengths in emotionally sensitive situations and ability to react calmly and effectively.
- Ability to represent the Hospice in an appropriate manner.
- Ability to be flexible, work well in a new and changing environment and promote progressive/innovative thinking as well as team-based care.
- Have knowledge of, and be sensitive to religious, ethnic and cultural diversity.
- Must have good communication skills both verbally and non-verbally and the ability to deal with people in crisis in a mature and non-judgmental manner.
- Must have the ability to maintain a feeling of peace and comfort in the Hospice.
- Ability to recognize the need for self-care in the Hospice workplace.
This position requires the individual to be compliant with all FCHS privacy and confidentiality policies and procedures; and to be compliant with all Privacy Legislation (FOIP, HIA, PIPA) relevant to FCHS.
