Position Overview:
We're looking for a Planning Engineer to join our Grid Infrastructure Planning Department. Under the direction of the Senior Planning
Engineer performs planning studies to evaluate future power system performance under a range of uncertain conditions. The role
supports long-term transmission and sub-transmission planning by developing study scenarios, assessing system constraints, and
providing technical insights to guide planning decisions.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct exploratory power system studies to assess future grid needs under uncertainty, including load growth, generation
additions, and emerging technologies.
- Perform customer load interconnection studies and provide advice to industrial customers.
- Perform exploratory studies regarding load and customer-owned generation interconnection, including feasibility
assessments, system impact analysis, and identification of required transmission and sub-transmission reinforcements.
- Contribute to Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) by assessing transmission requirements, analyzing resource scenarios, and
supporting long-term expansion strategies.
- Perform technical analysis using power system simulation tools (e.g., PSS®E, PSCAD, DSA Tools) to evaluate system
constraints, reliability risks, and develop cost effective mitigation solutions.
- Prepare technical reports, study documentation, and presentations summarizing assumptions, methodologies, results, and
recommendations.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders (planning, operations, asset management, and customer energy service) and support
customer engagement activities related to interconnection and planning studies.
Qualifications:
- Graduate in Electrical Engineering from a University of recognized standing with a minimum of six years of related work, of
which two years must be directly related to the analysis and planning of electrical power systems.
- Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a
specified amount of time).
- Experience conducting load flow, voltage stability and specialized power system studies.
- A good working knowledge of the power equipment, including its applications and limitations in the power system, would be an
asset.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with personnel both orally and in writing within the Corporation,
manufacturers, consulting engineers, and other utility representatives.
- Proven ability to carry out assigned duties with mature judgment and minimum supervision
- Must be able to work on project study teams and to work effectively with others on committees, subcommittees and working
groups.
- A master's degree and/or post-graduate courses in power system expansion, voltage stability and applying FACTS devices
