Better Living Health and Community Services has openings for the position of Personal Support Worker in our long term care facility at Thompson House. The successful candidate will provide client focused personal support care to residents in a home-like environment. Works as part of an interdisciplinary resident care team. This position reports to Better Care Staffing Scheduler.
The successful candidate for this position must possess the following qualifications:
- Ability to work during the weekdays (7AM-3PM and/or 3PM-11PM) and a availability commitment of every other weekend; consecutive Saturdays and Sundays
- Completion of PSW Certificate by a recognized college
- Active registration status on the PSW registry
- Experience in a long term care setting preferred
- Vulnerable Sector Police Clearance issued by local police station; completion of TB Test Form, within 6 weeks of offer of employment

The successful candidate for this position must be able to:
- Carry out the Care Plan to ensure the well-being, safety and comfort of the resident. Provides personal care to residents such as bathing, assists with personal hygiene, grooming, toileting, skin care, etc. Assists residents with range of motion (R.O.M.) exercises and mobility as directed. Transfers residents with mechanical/ceiling lifts as required. Documents all care provided on Point of Care (POC).
- Porters residents to and from the dining room. Serves meals and provides assistance and/or feeding residents as required. Records resident intake on POC. Measures and records output if indicated. Checks temperature, administers non-prescription treatments and collects specimens as directed by the Registered Staff. Ensures the overall health and safety of the resident during care. Maintains cleanliness and neatness of units and equipment.
- Prepares residents for medical appointments, social activities, religious services and laboratory technician/x-ray procedures. Promotes and encourages resident independence in activities of daily living, and supports resident’s emotional, social and spiritual needs. Assists with the admission, transfer (room to room) or discharge of residents.
- Reports information on resident health changes, cognitive or behavioural changes in the resident to the RN/RPN. Recognizes and reports any potential hazards or risks in the resident’s room to the RN/RPN on duty. Participates in meetings and planning nursing care through staff conferences with other members of residents Care Team as required. Reports all complaints or requests made by residents/family members to the RN/RPN.
- Participates in regular supervisory meetings with Supervisor. Seeks out necessary information to accomplish job responsibilities and communicates any departmental problems that impede the ability to carry out the job to the Supervisor.
- Reports all health and safety concerns to the Supervisor, In-Home Services and/or RN/RPN. Maintains standards outlined by the Provincial Health and Safety Act, Better Living’s health and safety procedures and safety/ fire regulations. Performs tasks according to the policies and procedures in the In-Home Services Personal Support Worker and Home Support Worker Manual. Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment such as; gloves, gowns, masks, etc. in adherence to routine infection control practices and health and safety guidelines.
- Collaborates with co-workers by sharing best practices and discussing methods and strategies for working with residents.
- Performs other duties as required . Attends departmental meetings and attends training and educational in-services (M). Completes timesheets and submits them to Supervisor (W). Completes Incident/Accident Forms, as required. Identifies necessary training needs relevant to position responsibilities (M). Maintains knowledge, observes, and practices appropriate procedures in regards to Fire, Infection Control, Health and Safety, Quality and environmental standards (D).
