Position overview
Did you know that 34,000+ Canadians are directly employed in the recycling industry? Be part of this team!
Here's our goal: Our goal is to process and recycle as many scrap materials as possible in order to play our part in keeping our environment clean, by using less energy-producing new metals. Most of our recycled metals are sold to steel mills, which are then exported and used in the fabrication of things like new cars, and new pipes.
The Non-Ferrous Labourer supports sorting, processing, and preparation of non-ferrous metals (aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel, etc.) in a dedicated area of the scrap yard. This role requires attention to detail for accurate material separation, physical stamina to handle materials, and a commitment to safety in a high-volume processing environment.
Responsibilities
- Sort incoming mixed scrap to separate non-ferrous metals from ferrous materials and contaminants using visual identification and magnets.
- Hand-sort and process specific non-ferrous grades, including aluminum rims, extrusions, copper wire, tubing, brass, lead, and stainless steel.
- Feed sorted materials into bailers and shears for processing, ensuring clean separation and minimal contamination.
- Remove non-metallics (plastic, wood, rubber) and prepare materials to meet buyer quality specifications and maximize recovery value.
- Operate basic equipment such as grinders, forklifts/pallet jacks, and loaders as trained.
- Maintain organized sorting tables, bins, and work areas; clean spills and debris to ensure safe workflow.
- Assist with loading processed non-ferrous bales or bundles onto trucks for outbound shipment.
- Participate in weekly safety meetings, follow lockout/tagout procedures, and wear required PPE (gloves, safety glasses, steel-toe boots).
Qualifications
- Previous experience in recycling, warehouse, or manual labour preferred; scrap yard experience a strong asset.
- Ability to identify common non-ferrous metals through visual characteristics, weight, and magnet testing.
- Physical ability to lift 50+ lbs repeatedly, stand for extended periods, and work outdoors in all weather.
- Strong attention to detail for accurate sorting and quality control.
- Reliable team player willing to learn grades, processes, and safety procedures quickly.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts or overtime during peak material volumes.
Working conditions
- Dedicated non-ferrous sorting area with exposure to dust, noise, metal fragments, and weather conditions.
- Physically demanding role requiring bending, reaching, and repetitive material handling.
- Fast-paced environment with daily production targets and quality standards.
