ASG Excavating Inc. is seeking an experienced Senior Heavy Civil Construction Estimator to join our team in Strathroy, Ontario. This is a senior-level role for a highly capable estimator with strong experience in heavy civil construction, excavation, earthworks, underground servicing, roadworks, and site development.
The successful candidate will play a key role in the continued growth of our business by leading the estimating process from initial tender review through final submission. We are looking for someone who understands heavy civil work in the field, can accurately price projects from the ground up, and is confident managing multiple tenders while working closely with ownership, operations, and project management.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the estimating and tendering process for heavy civil construction projects
- Review drawings, specifications, geotechnical reports, contracts, and tender documents to determine project scope and requirements
- Perform detailed quantity take-offs and prepare accurate project estimates for excavation, grading, earthworks, underground servicing, roadworks, and site development projects
- Develop complete pricing for labour, materials, equipment, trucking, subcontractors, disposal, and production rates
- Solicit, evaluate, and negotiate pricing from subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors
- Identify project risks, opportunities, and value engineering options during the bid process
- Attend site visits, pre-tender meetings, and client meetings as required
- Prepare bid summaries, tender packages, clarifications, and final submissions
- Work closely with operations and project management to ensure estimates reflect practical execution strategies and current market conditions
- Assist with budgeting, change order pricing, cost analysis, and project turnover after award
- Maintain and improve estimating systems, historical cost data, unit pricing databases, and bid tracking
- Help support strategic bid decisions by evaluating project fit, competitiveness, and overall risk
Qualifications
- Minimum 5+ years of estimating experience in heavy civil construction
- Proven experience pricing projects involving excavation, grading, sewer and watermain, storm systems, roadworks, earthworks, site servicing, and site development
- Strong understanding of civil construction methods, project sequencing, production rates, and field operations
- Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, engineering plans, specifications, and contract documents
- Experience preparing full-cost estimates including labour, equipment, trucking, materials, subcontractors, and indirect costs
- Strong commercial awareness with the ability to assess project risk and competitiveness
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and estimating software
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with ownership, field operations, project managers, subcontractors, and suppliers
- Civil engineering technology, construction management, quantity surveying, or related industry experience is considered an asset
