Position Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) is a regulated health care professional who adheres to and role models the Standards and Guidelines of the College of Nurses of Ontario; the SJHH mission vision and values policies and procedures; and applicable specialty standards. The RN provides patient/client-centred and evidence-informed care to promote health and assess the need for the provision of care and the treatment of health conditions by supportive preventative therapeutic palliative and rehabilitation means in order to attain or maintain optimal patient/client function. The RN collaborates with the inter-professional team and assumes a leadership role in delivering a full range of care and treatment to patients/clients including those with complex needs high acuity and less predictable outcomes.
Qualifications
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario required.
- Current BCLS/HCP certification is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge skill and expertise in Best Practice Guidelines pertaining to vascular access across a variety of patient populations is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge skill and expertise in Best Practice Guidelines pertaining to central venous access devices is required.
- Demonstrated experience in Peripherally Inserted Catheter (PICC) insertion technique preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with care and maintenance of central venous access devices PICCs and Port preferred.
- Current acute Medical/Surgical experience exceeding 5 years is preferred.
- Canadian Vascular Access Association (CVAA) certification and/or membership is preferred.
- Gentle Persuasive Approach training is preferred.
- Commitment to the use of the nursing process and individualized care plans.
- Demonstrated knowledge sensitivity and expertise in the care of seniors and their families.
- Ability to communicate (written and verbal) effectively with patients/clients and families.
- Practices collaboratively and communicates clearly with members of the interdisciplinary health care team to provide care for a full range of clients/patients.
- Ability to set priorities and organize work in response to patient/client and unit needs.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and continuing education.
- Good attendance and work record is essential.
Responsibilities
- Base practice on nursing science and on content relevant to nursing from other sciences and humanities. The Registered Nurse continues to learn throughout his/her professional life demonstrating ongoing knowledge of evidence-based practice.
- Employs advanced nursing knowledge in clinical practice decision making critical thinking leadership research utilization and resource management.
- Applies critical thinking to integrate knowledge and technical skills in the provision of care to diverse patient populations as assigned.
- Meet the ethical and legal requirements of professional practice.
- Coordinates and participates in discharge planning.
- Ensures effective communication between and among all relevant parties.
- Uses teaching/learning principles effectively to engage in patient and family education.
- Delivers care in a manner that preserves and protects patient autonomy dignity and rights.
- Promotes a safe environment and brings forward areas of concern and resolutions. This includes anticipating adverse events and preventing same or responding appropriately to minimize them.
- Participates in hospital programme and unit-based meetings councils and activities to support the mission vision philosophy and goals of the organization SJHH nursing and assigned area.
- Coordinates care with CCAC when patient discharged to ensure care is adequately maintained.
- Promotes a welcoming and safe learning environment for the orientation and ongoing education of new staff and learners through preceptorship/mentorship conferences and presentations.
