Under the direction of the Manager, Indigenous Initiatives and Inclusion, and where applicable with day-to-day supervision from the Community Campus Manager, the incumbent provides student and customer support services, as well as clerical support to those seeking service within the Aboriginal Resource Centre.
Specific Duties
- Work collaboratively to create a welcoming environment in the Aboriginal Resource Centre, performing reception services and assisting students in making appointments with Student Success Advisors, or directing them to other services as required.
- Assist Indigenous Education staff with Indigenous student applications.
- Assist students as they adjust to college-life.
- Organize Indigenous student activities and provide support for event planning.
- Support student orientation on campus and prepare orientation packages for new students if requested by orientation teams.
- Monitor and maintain inventory of supplies and forms to ensure a smooth operation for the department.
- Provide general office support, including but not limited to responding to inquiries, photocopying, filing and phone calls to students.
- Offer updates for web pages to Student Services departments as requested.
- You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of Indigenous learners and communities.
- You will promote a positive work atmosphere and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.
- Other duties as assigned by the Manager Indigenous Initiatives and Inclusion or designate.
Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum of one year post secondary training in related field
- 1 year or more Recent and relevant experience working with Indigenous students
- Proven customer service orientation.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and cooperatively with diverse cultures.
- Understanding of and ability to practice a learner/service centered approach.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate and implement activities.
- Strong understanding of cross-cultural communication and an ability to demonstrate effective cross-cultural communication and problem-solving skills under pressure.
- Ability to plan, schedule and prioritize own workload.
- Ability to deal with multiple tasks, responsibilities, and inquiries in very short time spans with multiple interruptions.
- Strong verbal communication skills
- Strong office and organizational skills.
- Outgoing personality; enthusiastic, creative and passionate about working with students and learning from other cultures.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Proficient in appropriate technological resources including the following computer areas: Word processing; spreadsheet and database application.
- Proven ability to maintain positive working relationships.
- Ability to work positively in a busy, demanding environment.
- Preference will be given to individuals who have previous experience with Indigenous students.
- Self-starter and initiator.
- Ability to take delegated responsibilities and get them done efficiently and with excellence.
