Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Accountant to provide financial management and advisory support to First Nations communities. The Accountant will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, supporting funding and grant reporting, and providing guidance to community leadership on financial planning and decision-making. This role requires strong technical accounting skills combined with cultural awareness and respect for Indigenous governance and community values.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements, budgets, and forecasts.
- Maintain accurate general ledger accounts and reconciliations.
- Ensure timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
Funding & Compliance
- Track and report on funding agreements, government transfers, and grant expenditures.
- Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and Indigenous funding requirements.
- Assist with annual audits and liaise with auditors as needed.
Community Support & Capacity Building
- Work with leadership, program managers, and community members to strengthen financial knowledge and accountability.
- Provide training and support to local staff on bookkeeping, financial systems, and reporting practices.
- Communicate financial information in a clear and accessible manner to non-financial audiences.
Advisory & Planning
- Support leadership in developing financial policies and procedures.
- Provide advice on financial sustainability, risk management, and long-term planning.
- Assist in developing business cases and proposals for community initiatives and projects.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- CPA designation (or working towards completion) preferred.
- Degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum 3–5 years of accounting experience, preferably in a non-profit, government, or Indigenous organization setting.
- Knowledge of funding agreements, public sector accounting standards, and reporting requirements.
- Strong computer skills, including accounting software (e.g., Sage and QuickBooks) and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts clearly.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities or organizations is considered a strong asset.
- Cultural awareness, sensitivity, and a commitment to supporting community values and traditions.
