General Description
The Community Researcher supports Lheidli T’enneh First Nation’s research initiatives by gathering, documenting, and analyzing information related to lands, culture, history, traditional knowledge, and community priorities. Working closely with Elders, Knowledge Holders, youth, and community members, the Community Researcher conducts cultural and historical reviews, archival research, literature reviews, and interviews to collect and preserve community knowledge. The role also assists with documenting and mapping traditional land use, occupancy sites, and areas of cultural significance, while maintaining accurate research records and data. Reporting to the Director of Title and Rights, the Community Researcher prepares reports, maps, and community information materials that support stewardship, planning, decision-making, and the preservation of Lheidli T’enneh knowledge and heritage for future generations.
Key Responsibilities
Research & Community Engagement
- Conduct cultural and historical reviews, archival research, literature reviews, interviews, surveys, and focus groups to gather and document community knowledge.
- Organize and facilitate engagement sessions with Elders, Knowledge Holders, youth, and other community members.
- Document and map traditional land use, occupancy sites, and areas of cultural significance.
- Promote research initiatives and share findings through reports, presentations, newsletters, maps, and community information materials.
- Ensure ethical, respectful, and culturally appropriate approaches to research and knowledge sharing.
Project Participation & Coordination
- Serve as the community lead on research projects and liaise with external consultants, researchers, and project partners.
- Develop workplans, coordinate meetings, manage project logistics, and support reporting requirements.
- Monitor project progress and provide regular updates to the Director and key stakeholders.
- Prepare, analyze, and present research findings to diverse audiences.
Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing
- Work collaboratively with departments across Lheidli T’enneh First Nation to support community priorities and initiatives.
- Support the preservation, documentation, and transfer of Lheidli T’enneh traditional knowledge, culture, history, and community perspectives.
- Contribute research and information that supports stewardship, land-use planning, decision-making, and future community initiatives.
- Maintain accurate, organized, and confidential research records and databases.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Diploma or certificate in Anthropology, Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences, Geography, History, Natural Resources, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience conducting community-based research, interviews, data collection, and engagement activities.
- Knowledge of and interest in Indigenous Knowledge, traditional land use studies, community-based research, and cultural preservation.
- Experience conducting cultural and historical reviews, archival research, literature reviews, and documenting oral histories is an asset.
- Understanding of and respect for First Nations cultures, values, traditions, and research protocols.
- Experience working with Elders, Knowledge Holders, youth, and community members in a respectful and culturally appropriate manner.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and contribute as part of a collaborative team.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to maintain accurate and confidential records.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with research databases, mapping tools, or geographic information systems (GIS) is an asset.
- Experience working in a First Nations or culturally diverse environment is considered a strong asset.
- Knowledge of the history, culture, language, and traditional territory of Lheidli T’enneh First Nation is an asset.
- Valid BC Driver’s Licence and ability to travel within the traditional territory as required.
- A satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.
