About the Role
We are seeking an experienced High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Transmission Expert to support a major grid interconnection project in partnership with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) of Ontario. This role will provide technical leadership on HVDC system design, integration, and commissioning as part of Ontario's evolving bulk power transmission infrastructure.
The successful candidate will work closely with IESO stakeholders, transmission owners, EPC contractors, and regulatory bodies to ensure the project meets Canadian grid codes, reliability standards, and interconnection requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead technical design and review of HVDC converter stations, transmission lines, and associated control/protection systems
- Support interconnection studies and coordinate with IESO on system impact assessments, grid code compliance, and reliability standards (NPCC/NERC)
- Develop and review technical specifications for HVDC equipment procurement (converters, transformers, filters, control systems)
- Perform load flow, transient stability, and power quality studies related to HVDC integration into the AC grid
- Liaise with IESO planning and operations teams throughout project lifecycle — from feasibility through commissioning
- Support regulatory filings and technical documentation required for IESO/OEB approval processes
- Provide oversight during factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and commissioning
- Troubleshoot technical issues related to converter control, harmonics, and system stability
- Mentor junior engineers and support internal knowledge transfer on HVDC technology
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems specialization preferred)
- 8+ years of experience in high voltage transmission systems, with minimum 5 years direct HVDC experience (LCC and/or VSC technology)
- Demonstrated experience with grid interconnection projects in North America; familiarity with IESO market rules, NPCC/NERC reliability standards strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of power system studies (PSS/E, PSCAD, EMTP-RV, or similar simulation tools)
- Experience working with transmission system operators, utilities, or EPC contractors on large-scale infrastructure projects
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license in Ontario, or eligibility for licensure
- Excellent communication skills for cross-functional coordination with regulators, engineers, and stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior direct experience with IESO-regulated projects or Ontario transmission infrastructure
- Experience with offshore/onshore HVDC interconnections or interties with neighboring grids (e.g., Quebec, Manitoba, U.S. Northeast)
- Familiarity with converter station design from major OEMs (Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy, GE Grid Solutions)
- Experience with renewable energy integration (wind/solar) via HVDC
Application question(s):
- How many years of experience do you have as High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Transmission Expert?
- What's your expected hourly rate for this role?
