Job Overview
The Orthopaedic Technician provides specialized musculoskeletal (MSK) care within ZerOne Athleticare's Rapid Access MSK Clinic as part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary care model. Working alongside Emergency Physicians, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Physiotherapists and Allied Health Professionals, the Orthopaedic Technician assesses, treats and manages patients presenting with a wide range of acute musculoskeletal injuries.
The Orthopaedic Technician functions with a high degree of clinical autonomy within established practice standards, contributing to timely assessment, definitive immobilization, patient education and coordinated follow-up care. This role supports efficient patient flow while delivering safe, evidence-informed, patient- and family-centered care.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive musculoskeletal and neurovascular assessments of patients presenting with acute orthopaedic injuries.
- Collaborate with physicians, physiotherapists and other members of the interdisciplinary team to develop and implement patient management plans.
- Recognize significant clinical findings and communicate changes in patient condition appropriately.
- Apply, adjust and remove casts, splints, braces and other orthopaedic immobilization devices.
- Assist with fracture and joint reduction procedures and other orthopaedic interventions within scope of practice.
- Monitor patient progress and identify concerns requiring reassessment or escalation of care.
- Provide patient and family education regarding injury management, immobilization, rehabilitation, activity restrictions and follow-up care.
- Coordinate referrals, diagnostic imaging and follow-up appointments to support continuity of care.
- Maintain accurate, timely and complete clinical documentation.
- Support efficient clinic operations and patient flow.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, continuing education and the ongoing development of musculoskeletal services.
- Practice in accordance with professional standards, organizational policies and evidence-informed care.
Reporting Relationship
- Reports to the Lead Orthopaedic Technician for day-to-day clinical operations and scheduling.
- Works collaboratively with physicians, physiotherapists and the interdisciplinary team to deliver patient care
Qualifications
Required
- Completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) education program.
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA).
- Completion of an accredited Orthopaedic Technician specialty program.
- Minimum two years of recent experience as an Orthopaedic Technician in an Emergency Department, fracture clinic, orthopaedic practice or sports medicine setting.
- Demonstrated competency in musculoskeletal and neurovascular assessment.
- Ability to independently assess, prioritize and manage patients with acute musculoskeletal injuries within established clinical pathways.
- Strong clinical reasoning and decision-making skills, including the ability to recognize conditions requiring urgent intervention.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Experience providing patient education related to orthopaedic injury management, immobilization and rehabilitation.
Preferred
- Experience working in a Rapid Access Musculoskeletal Clinic or ambulatory orthopaedic service.
- Experience with fracture reduction assistance and advanced immobilization techniques.
- Experience participating in quality improvement or clinical program development

Casual Positions Available,
● Hourly pay rates are competitive, and scale based on experience.
● Schedules may vary, the facility is open 7 days a week, from 6:30am - 9:30pm.
● Work will be located on-site at West Edmonton Mall Phase 1 on the 2nd floor, in the ZerOne Athleticare Clinic.
