Job Description:
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
This role is responsible for performing janitorial duties to ensure The Salvation Army’s facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner in accordance with the applicable standards and requirements. The role contributes to the broader mission and values of The Salvation Army, upholding standards of service that reflect its spiritual and social commitment to the community.
Accountabilities:
Janitorial cleaning of the Resource Centre - Daily
Complete all janitorial tasks throughout the Resource Centre to include but not limited to the following:
- Clean and wash Shelter Rooms 101, 102, 103 and hallway washrooms and showers, floor and bunk mats, 1st floor Staff washroom and all shelter floors including side entrance and office, empty all garbage.
- Clean shelter kitchen floor, counters and sinks, side entrance door windows, Office windows, client laundry room counters, floors and lint catchers, clean and disinfect all counter surfaces, doors and door handles, replace toilet paper and towels
- Clean 1st and 2nd floor Staff and kitchen washrooms – floors, toilet, sink, mirror, and paper , vacuum 1st and 2nd floor offices (5) and 2nd floor photocopy room
- Sweep/mop 2nd floor hallway floors, 1st to 2nd floor stairwell steps, dining room area (sweep and mop), and hallway leading to outside backdoor (sweep and wet mop).
- Vacuum back entrance mat
- Wipe down and disinfect all building doors, clean hallway walls and ceiling vents (vacuum and/or wipe down), clean (wipe-down) with damp cloth all ceiling and wall lights, exit signs
- Vacuum all building entrance and stairwell mat , s weep and mop front entrance and lobby (inside), clean front entrance windows and window frames/sills, doors and door handles, Wash elevator floor and walls
- Sweep/shovel outside entrance walk-ways from church to shelter and outside entrance to shelter and walkway
- Pick-up garbage and cardboard from kitchen
- Work on other janitorial/maintenance projects as identified by supervisor
- Post serving clean kitchen floors, wash dishes, wipe down tables and chairs, clean steam trays and change steam tray water
- Sweep and mop dining area floor
Church building cleaning - Weekly
- Clean front entrance floors, doors and windows.
- Clean 1st and 2nd floor washrooms.
- Sweep and mop kitchen floor
- Vacuum 1st floor sanctuary, nursery, office and library
- Vacuum 2nd floor children’s room and pray room
- Sweep and mop 2nd floor hallway
- Sweep and mop front and rear stairwells 1st floor to 2nd floor
- Ensure proper paper products and cleaning supplies are supplied to washrooms and kitchen
Laundry and stocking of supplies - Daily
- wash/dry/fold and store Shelter laundry
- shower towels, bedding, blankets and extra clothing
- Wash kitchen wash clothes, towel and aprons
Thrift Store Cleaning - Weekly
- Move racks to one side of store sweep, scrap off price tags from floor and wet mop floor.
- Once in the first half clean and dry shift racks to clean side of store and repeat.
- Sweep, scrap and wet mop serving area, front entrance (vacuum mat), back room sorting area (sweep and mop), and hallway leading to outside backdoor (sweep and wet mop).
- Vacuum back entrance mat
Critical Relationship Management:
- Directly reports to the Maintenance/ Janitorial Supervisor
- Primary contact is with the Maintenance Supervisor and Community Services staff members
- Works cooperatively as part of the Janitorial team to serve the Resource Center
Working Conditions:
As Janitorial staff there is often situations when flexible hours are required, possibly creating personal inconvenience. As well, there is often a high amount of stress involved when working with staff that has to work daily with “high demand” clients.
Education and experience Qualifications:
- Knowledge of cleaning and janitorial skills
- Prior experience in janitorial field
- Familiarity with different cleaning supplies
- Class 4 Driver’s License is an asset
Abilities and Skills:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Attention to detail
- Ability to drive
- Ability to follow directions and work independently
- Understanding of: Aboriginal and Inuit Cultures: Addictions: Mental Health and other social issues
- Effective communication in English both written and oral
- Ability to work within the mandate of and embrace the mission of The Salvation Army

The successful incumbent will be required to complete/provide:
- Criminal Record Check required
- Valid First Aid certificate is an asset
- WHMIS
- The Salvation Army on-line certification for abuse prevention

- Equipment includes computer software.
- Knowledge of janitorial cleaning will make achieving the position’s goals much easier.
- Enable the shelter and resource centre to maintain the government and health standards.

Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $24.72 to $25.29 with a maximum of $25.85.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
