The Facility Supervisor, Maintenance ensures the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of all building systems and amenities, including pools and HVAC equipment, while upholding health, safety, and cleanliness standards. This role coordinates and supervises contractors, manages maintenance tasks, and supports the oversight of housekeeping services to deliver a positive member and guest experience. Responsibilities include supporting departmental budgeting, overseeing supply inventory, and assisting in staff recruitment, training, and scheduling. The position also involves responding to facility emergencies and assuming operational leadership in the absence of the Facility Manager.
In this role, you will:
- Undertake preventative maintenance and repairs to building equipment, respond to work orders including painting, HVAC equipment, fire safety and emergency equipment, locker maintenance, and floor surfacing. Take appropriate action to rectify any problems, including coordinating third-party contractors. Perform building and equipment repairs as required
- Ensure the safe and continual operation of pools, whirlpools, saunas, and steam rooms, including related equipment, chemicals, and cleanliness, as required by relevant legislation. Take appropriate action relating to repairs
- Contact contractors as required, provide direct supervision of contractors while repairs are being performed, and coordinate with the Facility Manager
- Assist with materials management related to building supplies, ensure inventory levels are adequate, and order and replace materials as required. Support the Facility Manager in the development and maintenance of department budgets
- Assist the Facility Manager with staff recruitment, orientation, coordination, training, scheduling, and support. Provide support and leadership in the completion of hourly payroll using time and labour management software
- Perform light-duty cleaning, project cleaning, general cleaning, snow removal, and laundry service
- Provide direct supervision to the housekeeping team, ensure adequate coverage, and support a satisfactory guest experience
- Lead recruitment, hiring, training, and staff evaluation for the housekeeping department. Ensure all Public Health requirements for cleaning and sanitizing across the site are met
- Ensure the safety of all members, property, and self by following established Workplace Health & Safety practices and procedures, and by adhering to all YMCA of Greater Toronto policies and Priority SAM cleaning and maintenance standards
- Respond to all emergencies in the facility and report any maintenance issues to the Facility Manager. In the absence of the Facility Manager, serve as the building operator and provide opening, closing, or Acting General Manager coverage as required
- Perform other duties as assigned
You bring:
- High School education with willingness to increase knowledge and skills in this area
- Completion of courses offered as part of the Building Operator Certificate is an asset, or equivalent experience
- Pool Operator Certificate preferred (certification must be obtained within first three months), or equivalent experience
- Standard First Aid and CPR; other Health & Safety certifications and/or knowledge is an asset
- Minimum of 5 years related experience in skilled trades and/or building maintenance, preferably in areas like Electrical/Plumbing, Operating Engineering/Pneumatics, Mechanical HVAC, and Pool filtration/water chemistry
- Experience in pool operation an asset
- Excellent organization skills, including basic computer skills (Excel, Email, Internet, Building Automation Systems)
- Understanding of YMCA business practices and procedures is an asset
- Valid Ontario Driver’s License, F Class preferred
- Ability to use frequent light to medium physical effort: lifting up to 20 kg (44 lbs.), bending and stooping (snow removal, trail maintenance, chopping wood), etc
- Ability to work outdoors for at least 4 hours daily year-round; may be exposed to heat, humidity, or cold
- Ability to work flexible hours, including days, evenings, and weekends
- Demonstrated strong leadership skills developed through progressively responsible experience in a supervisory role, encouraging and motivating staff and volunteers, acknowledging and appreciating contributions, and actively involving oneself in partnerships and collaborations
- Well-developed interpersonal and relationship building skills, capable of establishing rapport and excellent communication with members, staff, and volunteers
- Excellent written communication skills
- Excellent understanding of diversity, inclusion, and equity, including the ability to identify and address barriers, work effectively with diverse stakeholders, and integrate equity into program design
