Summary
As an After School Program Leader (BAP), you will play an important role in providing a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for children attending the Nova Scotia Before and After Program at Bridgewater Elementary School.
Our recreation-based program focuses on outdoor play, physical activity, creativity, social connection, and child-led experiences. You will help children learn, grow, build confidence, and develop positive relationships through meaningful after-school programming. This aligns with the Nova Scotia Before and After Program's emphasis on outdoor play, recreation, physical literacy, and inclusive practices.
This position works Monday to Friday from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM when school is in session, and 12:00 PM to 5:30 PM on CLT days.
The position runs from September 2026 through June 2027 and does not operate on holidays, storm days, professional development days, or when school is closed.
Applicants with an Early Childhood Education Classification will be paid according to the Nova Scotia ECE Wage Scale, where applicable.
Responsibilities
- Assist in planning and implementing engaging activities for children ages 4–12.
- Provide a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment for all participants.
- Supervise children at all times and ensure their well-being.
- Support children's social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development.
- Facilitate outdoor play, physical literacy, and recreation-based programming.
- Build positive relationships with children, families, school staff, and coworkers.
- Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding their child's participation.
- Contribute to a positive team environment and YMCA culture.
- Maintain program areas, materials, and resources.
- Follow YMCA Child Safeguarding and Child Protection policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Experience working with children in childcare, recreation, camps, education, or related settings preferred.
- Strong caregiving and communication skills.
- Ability to engage children in a variety of recreational and educational activities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Experience supporting children with diverse needs is considered an asset.
- Current First Aid and CPR-C Certification (required).
- Commitment to creating inclusive and welcoming spaces for all children.
Required Qualifications
- Clear Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Clear Child Abuse Register Check.
- First Aid and CPR-C Certification.
- Experience working with children.
