As a Legal Researcher at FoE, you'll dig into the laws and court decisions that shape who actually gets to participate in Canadian democracy. Reporting to the Director of Research, you'll analyze Charter jurisprudence, case law, and scholarly sources to produce annotated bibliographies and background papers on the legal barriers facing marginalized and underrepresented communities. If you're interested, the role can grow into experience with corporate and non-profit law, legal compliance, or attending court proceedings under supervision.
Tasks:
- Conduct legal research and analyze case law, statutes, and Charter jurisprudence
- Collaborate with community organizers to gather data on legal concerns affecting communities
- Produce annotated bibliographies and background papers documenting research findings
- Translate complex legal findings into accessible language for non-legal audiences
- Prepare legal communications, briefs, advocacy materials, and reports for internal and external stakeholders
Key skills and abilities
- Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to translate complex legal concepts for non-legal audiences
- Critical thinking and analytical skills, able to engage with complex legal and policy questions
- Foundation in qualitative and quantitative research methods
- Familiarity with legal databases (or willingness to learn quickly)
- Self-motivated and able to take initiative
- Strong sense of professional ethics and responsibility
- Background in law, political science, public policy, or social sciences is an asset
