What will you do?
- Analyze medical, personal and financial information submitted with life and critical illness insurance applications.
- Assess and classify risk. Gather additional information like medical tests or refer cases as required
- Approve cases within your authority limit. Submit cases exceeding limits for co-sign.
- If decisions are unfavourable for the Client, try to negotiate a better decision from our reinsurers, in accordance with reinsurance treaties and internal rules
- Liaise with business leaders and advisors, delivering exceptional service and expertise
- Communicate and explain decisions effectively to financial security advisors and/or Clients’ physicians, as required
- Respond to inquiries from financial advisors and general agents without revealing confidential content
- Document thoughtful decisions in underwriting system
- Contribute to a positive environment through teamwork, a spirit of innovation, continuous improvement, and professional development
- Maintain medical knowledge and stay current on underwriting approaches
What do you need to succeed?
- Minimum 3 years of experience as an Individual Life Underwriter
- Existing life and critical illness signing authorities
- Analytical, judgement, problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Influencing and negotiation skills
- Knowledge of medicine and risk factors
- Service-oriented attitude with interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with our internal and external partners
- Proven ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure while prioritizing multiple tasks
- Specialized training: ALU certificate and commitment to ongoing education with a goal of attaining the Fellow, Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) and Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) designations
- As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only as the incumbent will be responsible for creating and delivering training to employees and/or English and French-speaking clients across Canada or worldwide.
The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
