Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.
Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.
Position Overview:
The Sr. Research Assistant position involves policy research and analysis to produce short reports on best practices and precedents on mining policies and operations related to environmental, LGBTQ2S+, and community consultations.
Duties:
- The SRA will conduct a literature review and background research on best practices in mining policy, using Zotero and Microsoft Suite programs.
- The SRA may assist with data collection, including at public consultations.
- The SRA will assist with duties related to the production of articles, reports, publications and presentations, namely writing short reports at a professional level (10-20 pages) and writing short fact sheets for public use (2 pages).
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications:
- Recent completion of an undergraduate degree in Geography, Politics, Environmental Studies, Urban Inner-City Studies, or related areas.
- The ideal candidate will be entering or currently enrolled in a Master’s Program in a related area.
- Proficiency with Microsoft suite of programs.
- Proficiency with Zotero.
- Experience with policy analysis, and research in peer-reviewed and grey literature is required.
- The successful candidate must have a general understanding of and interest in: equity, diversity and inclusion policies, and/or environmental issues regarding resource development, and/or public engagement regarding resource development, and/or planning with communities.
- The successful candidate must be self-driven with strong communication skills.
- Successful applicant must have access to a computer, the internet and a University of Winnipeg library account.
Condition(s) of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The period of work will be from June 22, 2026 - September 4, 2026, and the estimated total hours of work will be 0-120 hours.
