Planning facilitators are key in assisting a person and their supporters to remain accountable to guiding principles for respecting and protecting the equal right to decide. They may be called upon to support planning processes in challenging situations, such as:
- Recruiting people who can be decision-making supporters in the planning process, for a person is isolated and with no one in their lives.
- Communicating with a person whom the facilitator is unable to understand.
- Mediating differences among decision-making supporters about how to interpret a person's will and preferences or what decisions must respect the person's will in the circumstances.
- Assisting the person and their decision-making supporters balance their dignity of risk with the potential for harm that may come with following a person's wishes.
- Balancing respect for the person's right to decide (e.g., to remain at home with a family member) and the impact that decision might have on over-extending their family members' capacity and help find ways to respect the wishes of both.
For a decision-making support planning process to effectively address these and other challenges, the planning facilitator needs access to a mentor or supervisor with whom they can meet. The mentoring/supervision relationship gives the planning facilitator a vital opportunity to strengthen their skills, reflect on the process, obtain suggestions about addressing difficulties, and brainstorm ideas about staying true to the guiding principles for respecting and protecting the equal right planning
