Maintenance Manager – Multi-Site Operations
CT Bakery is seeking an experienced and hands-on Maintenance Manager – Multi-Site Operations to oversee all maintenance operations across our Canadian facilities and provide ongoing support to our U.S. manufacturing plant. This leadership role is responsible for ensuring maximum equipment reliability, minimizing downtime, maintaining preventative maintenance programs, and leading a high-performing maintenance team.
The successful candidate will be a mechanical or maintenance professional with extensive experience in food manufacturing and a proven track record of managing maintenance departments, improving equipment performance, reducing waste, and delivering operational excellence. This role works closely with the President, General Manager, Production, Quality Assurance, Sanitation, Human Resources, and external contractors to support the company's continued growth.
This is a fully on-site position requiring frequent travel between facilities and flexibility to respond to operational needs outside of regular business hours.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance Operations
- Lead all maintenance operations across multiple manufacturing facilities in Ontario and provide maintenance leadership and support to the company's U.S. plant.
- Oversee the maintenance of all production equipment, facility systems, utilities, offices, and building infrastructure.
- Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate preventative, predictive, corrective, and emergency maintenance activities.
- Eliminate equipment downtime by implementing proactive maintenance strategies.
- Coordinate emergency repairs to minimize production interruptions.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and automated equipment failures and determine root causes.
- Recommend and implement corrective actions and long-term solutions to improve reliability.
- Support equipment installations, upgrades, renovations, plant expansions, and commissioning of new equipment.
- Maintain facility systems including HVAC, compressed air, plumbing, electrical systems, refrigeration (where applicable), boilers, and building infrastructure.
- Perform or coordinate repairs to office facilities and building systems as required.
Preventative Maintenance & Equipment Reliability
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve preventative and predictive maintenance programs.
- Maintain maintenance schedules with measurable targets for downtime reduction and waste minimization.
- Ensure preventative maintenance activities are completed on schedule and documented accurately.
- Monitor equipment performance and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reliability.
- Maintain CMMS records, maintenance logs, and equipment histories.
- Analyze recurring equipment issues and implement permanent corrective actions.
Food Safety & Regulatory Compliance
Ensure all maintenance activities comply with company policies and regulatory requirements, including:
- HACCP
- Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
- SQF/BRC standards
- CFIA regulations
- Occupational Health & Safety legislation
Additional responsibilities include:
- Supporting customer, regulatory, and third-party audits.
- Ensuring maintenance work does not compromise food safety or product quality.
- Verifying proper sanitation following maintenance activities.
- Ensuring compliance with lockout/tagout procedures and all food safety protocols.
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, coach, and develop maintenance employees across all facilities.
- Manage daily scheduling and allocation of maintenance personnel.
- Conduct performance evaluations and support employee development.
- Create a culture focused on accountability, teamwork, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Provide technical guidance and hands-on support when required.
- Coordinate maintenance coverage across all production shifts.
- Support after-hours maintenance activities when operationally necessary.
Human Resources Partnership
Work closely with Human Resources to support workforce planning by:
- Assisting with recruitment and interviewing of maintenance employees.
- Participating in hiring decisions.
- Supporting onboarding and training programs.
- Assisting with scheduling of internal maintenance staff and temporary employees.
- Identifying staffing requirements based on operational demands.
- Supporting employee performance management and development initiatives.
Inventory & Vendor Management
- Manage maintenance inventory and spare parts across all locations.
- Ensure critical replacement parts remain available to minimize downtime.
- Coordinate repairs and service providers.
- Manage relationships with equipment suppliers and contractors.
- Assist with maintenance budgeting and cost control initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to reduce maintenance costs while improving equipment performance.
Multi-Site & U.S. Travel Responsibilities
- Provide maintenance leadership across the company's Etobicoke, Mississauga, Markham, and U.S. facilities.
- Travel regularly between all company locations to ensure consistent maintenance standards.
- Support equipment installations, plant start-ups, shutdowns, audits, preventative maintenance programs, and improvement projects.
- Work closely with local leadership teams to ensure operational consistency.
- Flexibility to travel to the U.S. as business needs require.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve plant efficiency, reliability, productivity, and equipment performance.
- Recommend process improvements and equipment upgrades.
- Support Lean Manufacturing initiatives.
- Reduce waste and improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
- Participate in capital improvement projects and facility upgrades.
Qualifications
Education
- College diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
- Licensed Industrial Millwright (433A), Industrial Electrician (442A/309A), or equivalent trade certification is considered an asset.
Experience
- Minimum five (5) years of maintenance experience in a food manufacturing environment.
- Minimum two (2) years of leadership or supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated success managing maintenance operations within multiple manufacturing facilities.
- Experience developing and maintaining preventative maintenance programs with measurable performance targets.
- Experience improving plant reliability, reducing downtime, and minimizing waste.
- Experience leading maintenance projects and managing capital improvements.
- Experience working with CMMS software.
- Experience supporting food safety audits and regulatory inspections.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting abilities with hands-on experience.
- Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, PLC-controlled, and automated production equipment.
- Strong understanding of food manufacturing equipment including mixers, conveyors, ovens, packaging equipment, and processing systems.
- Excellent analytical and root cause analysis skills.
- Exceptional organizational and time management abilities.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and maintenance management software.
Additional Requirements
- Valid Ontario Class G driver's licence with reliable transportation.
- Valid passport and ability to travel to the United States as required.
- Willingness to travel regularly between company facilities.
- Ability to work days, afternoons, nights, weekends, and respond to emergency maintenance situations when required.
- Ability to lift, climb, bend, and work safely in a manufacturing environment.
