THE ROLE – KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
As our 4th -Year HVAC Apprentice, you'll work alongside experienced Journeypersons on a variety of residential and light commercial HVAC projects across Central Alberta and the surrounding area. Day-to-day, you can expect to:
● Install residential and light commercial HVAC systems, including forced-air furnaces, central air conditioners, heat pumps, HRVs/ERVs, ventilation systems, and ductwork
● Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, mechanical drawings, and job specifications
● Run refrigerant lines, make electrical connections, and assist with gas piping installations — in accordance with your current certification level and under Journeyperson supervision where required
● Commission and test newly installed systems to verify correct operation and performance
● Troubleshoot and diagnose basic system faults identified during the installation process
● Ensure all work is completed in compliance with Alberta Building Code, TSSA standards, and all applicable safety regulations
● Maintain a clean, safe, and organized job site at all times
● Work collaboratively with Journeypersons, project leads, and other tradespeople on site
● Stay current on apprenticeship record book requirements and actively progress toward 4th Period milestones
● Maintain tools, equipment, and company vehicles in proper working order — treat the gear like it's your own
WHAT YOU BRING – QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Experience & Certification
● Currently enrolled in and actively progressing through a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic (RACM) apprenticeship program — 4th Period (Year 4) standing is required
● Minimum 2–3 years of hands-on HVAC installation experience
● Valid Alberta apprenticeship indenture / registration with Alberta Advanced Education, Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT)
● Gasfitter – Class B certification is a strong asset (or currently working toward it; note that Gas Fitting is now integrated into the RACM program in Alberta)
● Working toward Red Seal endorsement upon Journeyperson completion — this is the expectation and we'll support you in getting there
● Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (minimum) with a clean driver's abstract required
● First Aid / CPR certification is an asset
Technical Skills
● Proficient in the installation of forced-air furnaces, central air conditioners, heat pumps, HRVs/ERVs, and ductwork systems
● Working knowledge of refrigerant handling procedures and relevant regulations (Alberta, TSSA)
● Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and equipment manufacturer manuals
● Basic electrical knowledge as it applies to HVAC systems (low-voltage controls, line-voltage connections)
Physical Requirements
● Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs, and occasionally up to 75 lbs
● Comfortable working in confined spaces, attics, crawl spaces, and on rooftops
● Ability to stand, kneel, crouch, and sustain awkward body positions for extended periods
● Comfortable working in varying temperatures and weather conditions — this is Calgary, after all
● Must be able to safely climb ladders and work at heights
