As part of our continued expansion into the skilled trades sector, we are launching a Construction and Renovation Program designed to prepare students with practical, job-ready skills for careers in the residential construction industry.
We are seeking an experienced construction professional to join our team as the Program Advisor & Lead Instructor for Construction and Renovation Program. This individual will play a key role in the successful launch and ongoing delivery of the program by providing academic and industry expertise, advising on the development of our practical training facility, reviewing and enhancing curriculum, and delivering high-quality instruction to students.
This is a newly created position at Business and Technical Training College, established to support the strategic development and expansion of the College's Skilled Trades Training Division.
Position Overview
The Program Advisor & Lead Instructor will work closely with the College's academic / leadership team to support the successful launch and ongoing delivery of the Construction and Renovation Program.
The successful candidate will review the program curriculum, instructional materials, lesson plans, and assessment tools, providing recommendations to ensure the content reflects current industry practices, Ontario Building Code requirements, evolving construction technologies, and employer expectations. The successful candidate will play an integral role in maintaining the quality and relevance of the program through continuous curriculum review and improvement.
In addition to academic responsibilities, the successful candidate will provide expert guidance on the planning and development of the College's practical construction training facility, including recommendations for equipment, tools, workshop layout, safety requirements, and hands-on learning environments that support effective skills training.
Following the program launch, the successful candidate will serve as the Lead Instructor, delivering both classroom and practical instruction while mentoring students and contributing to the continued growth and success of the program.
Key Responsibilities
Program Review & Academic Development
- Review and evaluate curriculum, lesson plans, presentations, student manuals, assignments, practical exercises, and assessment tools.
- Update and enhance course content to ensure alignment with current industry practices, Ontario Building Code requirements, workplace safety standards, and employer expectations.
- Recommend improvements to learning materials, practical activities, and evaluation methods.
- Identify opportunities to incorporate new construction technologies, tools, materials, and best practices into the program.
- Support continuous curriculum review and quality improvement initiatives.
Training Facility Planning & Development
- Advise on the design, layout, and functionality of the College's practical construction training facility.
- Recommend the tools, equipment, materials, machinery, and instructional resources required for hands-on training.
- Assist in planning practical workstations that simulate real-world residential construction environments.
- Provide recommendations on workshop organization, safety requirements, storage solutions, and equipment procurement.
- Collaborate with the College's leadership team to ensure the facility supports effective practical learning.
Instruction & Student Success
- Deliver engaging classroom and hands-on practical instruction.
- Facilitate workshops, demonstrations, and laboratory activities.
- Assess student performance through practical evaluations, assignments, quizzes, and competency-based assessments.
- Provide academic guidance, mentorship, and support to students.
- Maintain a safe, professional, and inclusive learning environment.
- Work collaboratively with the academic team to ensure a high-quality student learning experience.
Industry Collaboration
- Keep the program aligned with current residential construction practices, industry trends, and labour market needs.
- Recommend ongoing program enhancements based on employer feedback and emerging industry developments.
- Support the College in maintaining a high-quality, industry-relevant training program.
Qualifications
- Minimum 8 + years of experience in residential construction, renovation, carpentry, or a related skilled trade.
- Minimum 5+ experience teaching or training apprentices, college students, or adult learners is required.
- Red Seal Certification in Carpentry or another relevant skilled trade is considered a strong asset.
- Strong knowledge of residential construction methods, Ontario Building Code requirements, and construction safety standards.
- Experience reviewing, developing, or updating curriculum, training materials, or instructional resources is considered a strong asset.
- Experience planning, establishing, or managing construction workshops or training facilities is required.
- Excellent communication, presentation, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with learning management systems is considered an asset.
Work Schedule:
The successful candidate will be expected to manage their time effectively and meet project milestones, deliverables, and deadlines as established by the College.

Pay: $55.00-$60.00 per hour
Expected hours: 15.0 – 25.0 per week
