Overview:
Emily’s House is seeking skilled, experienced, and passionate registered practical nurses for a contract part-time and full-time positions.
As part of the Emily’s House team, you will be expected to contribute to our strategic plan and priorities which includes working towards becoming a centre of excellence in paediatric palliative care and building a culture of quality improvement. This is achieved by providing exceptional patient and family-centred care, meeting best practice standards in accordance with the College of Nurses (CNO), teaching, engaging with the interprofessional team and participating in professional development through on-going education.
What is Emily's House?
Emily’s House children’s hospice is a 10 bed, not-for-profit organization, offering family centred paediatric palliative care in a home-like environment. It was established in 2013 by Philip Aziz Centre for Hospice Care, our umbrella organization, which has provided in-home visiting hospice programs for the past 25 years in our community for both adults and children and their caregivers.
Children living with a medically complex, progressive life-limiting diagnoses can be admitted to Emily’s House for medical respite, transitional care (either hospital to home or the reverse, home to hospital), symptom management, and end of life care
What is the role?
A nurse at Emily’s House has knowledge and experience working with children who have medically complex conditions and their families. Additionally, the nurse has experience collaborating with the interprofessional team, providing patient / family education, partnering with the patient / family to establish plans of care, and meeting the patient / family goals of care.

The overall function of the nurse is to assist patients and their families in managing clinical conditions while ensuring the appropriate and necessary supports are in place for comfort. The nurse will become a member of the interprofessional team working along side Personal Support Workers, Music Therapist, Child Life Specialist, Counsellors and Volunteers as well as, establish and maintain professional relationships with colleagues at partner organizations. The nurse acts as a clinical resource for all members of the care team.
The role of the nurse at Emily’s House is to deliver safe, effective, patient and family-centred, ethical, and evidence-based nursing care. The overall function of the nurse is to assist patients and their families in managing clinical conditions while ensuring comfort.
The nurse reports to the Manager of Clinical Programs.
Orientation to Emily’s House will include learning about the basic principles of hospice care with a special focus on paediatric hospice care.
Key Responsibilities and Expectations:
Clinical Practice
- Uses evidence-based practice to plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for patients with medically complex, life limiting diagnoses and their families
- Continuously assess the outcome of care provided as well as assesses and manages conditions and symptoms related to the diagnosis
- Provides nursing care utilizing a strengths-based approach that promotes and supports the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual well-being of patients and families
- Advocates for patient / family goals of effective outcomes and appropriate use of resources
- Practices culturally and clinically competent care
- Supports and respects the patient / family’s rights to make decisions based on their own values, beliefs, and experiences
- Personal / professional capacity to deal with death and dying on an ongoing basis
- Knowledgeable and committed to philosophy of hospice care
- Knowledgeable and committed to the concept of cultural humility
Clinical Skills
- Knowledge of paediatric medication, including medication calculations and medication administration
- Strong documentation skills that align with the CNO’s best practice standards
- Strong head-to-toe assessment skills
- Able to work with various infusion pumps
- Able to work with enteral feeding tubes
- Able to work with tracheostomies
- Able to work with central venous access devices
- Able to work with non-invasive ventilation devices
- Able to pronounce the death of a patient and communicate clearly to family
- Post-mortem care

- Utilizes the teaching / learning process to provide education, both formal and informal, to patients / families, colleagues, students, and other professionals

Experience
- Ideally has a minimum of one year nursing experience in a paediatric environment, and/or palliative care experience
- Experience, knowledge, or interest in a hospice setting
- Experience, knowledge, or interest in working with patients requiring palliative care
Licensure, Certification & Education
- Current registration and licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) required (in good standing with the CNO)
- Current BCLS Level C
