Reporting to the program manager, the Family Support Worker strengthens the role of caregivers of individuals living with mental illness, through supportive counseling, education, the promotion of self-care strategies, assistance with navigating the mental health system and equipping family members to advocate on behalf of their loved ones.

What You'll Do:
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Assist individuals and families to identify their concerns, increase awareness of and access to resources and appropriate educational materials;
- Facilitate individual and group counselling sessions for family members;
- Support caregivers in building healthy relationships, enhancing personal connections, implementing self-care strategies, becoming strong advocates for their loved ones and in developing a sense of belonging and support in their community;
- Initiate intakes and conduct needs assessments;
- Refer and link clients and caregivers to a range of community resources, including housing, legal supports, health supports, etc.;
- Maintain client records, case notes and other supportive documentation related to individual support;
- Maintain client and service data and adhere to all reporting requirements and service evaluation timelines.
The successful candidate will possess:
- Relevant undergraduate degree or diploma in social work, counselling, psychology or a related field;
- Bachelor of Social Work or Master of Social Work will be considered an asset;
- Minimum 3 years experience providing supportive counselling to individuals and groups;
- Minimum 3 years experience working with community health or social service organizations, with a emphasis on Community-Based Mental Health;
- Experience working from a non-judgmental, family centric empowerment framework;
- Experience facilitating support groups for adults;
- Have working knowledge of the Ontario Mental Health Act and other relevant Acts as they pertain to this position.
Key skills and abilities we are looking for:
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills;
- Demonstrated counselling and referral skills; and ability to effectively link clients to supportive services;
- Demonstrated group facilitation skills;
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to issues of gender, race, sexual orientation and issues impacting diverse communities;
- Self-directed and independent, but also experienced in working effectively as a member a team, which includes internal and external stakeholders;
- Applied computer skills (Microsoft Office, Client Information Systems, Web browsing);
- Fluency in a second language is a strong asset and preferred;
- Valid Driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle is required.
